Artist’s Statement:
I have been surrounded by artists virtually all my life. I received my first drawing instruction at the age of six from my father. We were living in New Mexico at the time and he was an avid amateur landscape painter there. Although I dabbled in painting off and on for years, my first career took a different path. Following a BA from the University of Colorado and a PhD from The Ohio State University I entered a career in neuroscience research. However, in 2004, I committed to painting full time and was almost immediately rewarded with the joy of recreating scenes I loved. Atlantic Colours is a limited edition giclee print by James Bartholomew. Bartholomew uses short and sharp brush strokes to portray the turbulent sea.
James Bartholomew works on a comparatively large scale (typically 70cm x 50cm or bigger) which allows for a loose approach. – Much smaller and I find the process becomes a bit fiddly! I mostly work in pastel & watercolour together, the mediums soon becoming mixed up. The pastel will sometimes get wet and moved around within the paint, becoming simply a pigment. Other times it is used over the top of the dry paint. Through this method, the vibrancy can be reintroduced with the pastels and the painting can be changed at any stage. This leaves plenty of room to experiment on the surface without worrying about spoiling the painting, which I find quite liberating. I have also recently discovered a new love for painting in acrylic. I find the vibrancy and depth of the pigments particularly good for my marine subjects and the intense hues sometimes found when sun combines with sea water. I try to create paintings that are as uplifting and inspiring as the subjects are to me and to convey the energy and vibrancy that draw me to them. The things I paint are basically the things I love. From breaking waves on the Cornish coast at first light, to vibrant, crumbling Venetian facades. From a storm arriving...

This contemporary coastal landscape is a Limited Edition print by Daniel Pollera. It depicts a sandy beach with waves rolling in from the right-hand side of the composition. Two Adirondack chairs are seated on the beach, in front of wooden fencing, overlooking the ocean. A beach house can be seen slightly up a hill, behind the fence, with a white porch and trim. Very light clouds can be seen throughout a vibrant blue sky.

Daniel Pollera was born in 1953 in the coastal town of Freeport, New York. His interest in art began at a very young age, gravitating toward drawing and painting the surrounding coastline of Long Island. After a short study at SUNY Farmingdale in Commercial Art, he left to enter the family business.
For almost 15 years, Daniel took a sabbatical from painting, but this didn’t affect his love for the sea. He obtained a Captain’s License in 1977 from the United States Coast Guard and took passengers for hire on the open ocean. Through this experience and visual knowledge he was drawn to begin painting again. Although Daniel was primarily self-taught, he worked with Frances Norris Streit, a portrait and mural artist, assisting her on a 14’ x 30’ historical mural for the Roslyn Savings Bank. He also studied with Everett Molinari, a well-respected President of the National Mural Society. Museum collections include Long Island Museum, Parrish Art Museum, and Guild Hall Museum.
