About the Item

A ca. 1940 etching of a view of the Manhattan skyline by artist Nat Lowell. Signed and titled in pencil, ca. 1940. Artworks size: 4 1/4" x 5 1/4". Archivally matted to 12" x 12". Nat Lowell: A strongly regarded New York City artist, Nat Lowell was famous for his etched views of Manhattan and its surroundings. Born in Latvia, Lowell came to New York at an early age and studied under Carroll Beckwith and Siddons Mowbray at the Art Students League. His first published etchings date from around 1907. During the following forty years, Lowell concentrated his artistic talents upon the ever changing skyline of the city. Some of his etchings were published by the influential Associated American Artists, New York, who also published original graphic art by such leading individuals as Reginald Marsh, Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. During his career Nat Lowell was also highly respected in New York as an art lecturer and as a teacher. Collections of his original etchings are included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library. His etched views provide a most important historical and artistic record of New York during the first half of the twentieth century. Edition: Lowell rarely numbered his original etchings in specific editions. The vast majority, however, were published in editions ranging from 100 to 200 impressions. Source: Art of the print

Les Belles et la Bête: Before the Hunt
By Peter Milton
Located in Middletown, NY
Resist ground etching and engraving on cream wove paper, 22 x 39 inches (558 x 990 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated, and numbered 27/160 in pencil, lower margin. With the blindstamp of the printer, Robert E. Townsend, in the lower left margin. A beautiful, richly inked impression of this highly detailed, large image. In very good condition with minor mat tone, extremely minor scattered light surface soiling, and one pin-point sized dot of brown discoloration on the lower left margin, recto, well outside of image area. [Milton 99]. Milton states that there is a metaphorical evolution at the root of his body of graphic work, and with Les Belles et la Bête, Before the Hunt, he found himself at a crossroads that he viewed as a sort of artistic adolescence, which he felt demanded a natural examination of mysteries of sexual awakening. The image is brimming with fantastical images and metaphors for the confrontation of sexual exploration; a Freudian analyst appears in the left of the image, scattered tableaus of paired figures...
