This is the first of three depictions of rain in the series, all belonging to the summer season. Here Hiroshige depicts the kind of steady, slanting rain typical of the "plum rain" in June, so named for the fruit that appears at that time. In the Kanda River the boatmen, protected by straw rain cloaks, carry their loads of lumber, while the hill people seem all at ease in the hot summer rain. Visible on the right are the outer walls of Yushima Seidō Shrine, founded in the 17th century for the study of Confucianism.
