About the Item
Hand-colored engraved map by map publisher and engraver Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), offical cartographer for the Dutch East India Company and considered one of the great masters of 17th century Dutch cartography. His most famous work was the "Atlas Novus" or "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus" published in six volumes in 1635. Subesequent versions, reworked and expanded by his son Joan, were published until 1655, with the final version - the largest such work in the 17th century - pubished as "Atlas Major" from 1662-1665.
Highlights of this map are the left and right decorative border illustrating men and women of different nations in the style of dress representing their country, topped by a series of vignettes and plans representing Amsterdam, Prague, Constantinople, Venice, Rome, Paris, London, Toledo and Lisbon. Also of interest are the inclusion of animal figures, ships, and the mythical island of Frisland.
