Fast and secure shipment. -- Henri Matisse’s Jazz remains one of the most groundbreaking achievements in 20th-century art, and the 1983 George Braziller edition continues this legacy by making the celebrated portfolio available to a wider audience in a faithful and beautifully produced form. Originally published in 1947, Jazz marked a decisive turning point in Matisse’s career. After undergoing major surgery in 1941, the artist—confined largely to bed or a wheelchair—shifted away from traditional painting and drawing and developed a new artistic language using coloured paper cut-outs. He called this method “drawing with scissors,” as it allowed him to work directly with colour, bypassing the separation between drawing and painting that had long challenged him. This process resulted in compositions of striking simplicity, clarity, and rhythm, each created from hand-painted sheets cut and arranged into bold, expressive forms. The original 1947 edition of Jazz, published by Tériade, was printed using the pochoir technique, a demanding stencil-based process carried out under Matisse’s close supervision. These prints were produced in limited numbers and remain both delicate and exceptionally rare. Their significance lies not only in their artistic innovation but also in the deeply personal context in which they were created: Matisse used the cut-outs to solve long-standing questions of colour, space, and form at a moment when his physical limitations forced him to reinvent his practice. Initially titled Le Cirque, the suite was later renamed Jazz, a title Matisse welcomed for its evocation of improvisation, movement, and musicality—qualities that permeate both the images and the handwritten text that interleaves them. The portfolio integrates memories of circus acts, mythological scenes, travel impressions, and expressive abstractions, all united through a sense of spontaneity and rhythmic invention. The 1983 George Braziller publication plays a crucial role in preserving and transmitting this legacy. Produced nearly four decades after the first edition, it reproduces the Jazz plates through high-quality lithography executed by printer Ernst Wartelsteiner. While not created using the original pochoir method, this authorised posthumous edition captures the clarity, intensity of colour, and visual balance characteristic of Matisse’s cut-outs. Its purpose was not to replace the rare 1947 prints but to allow collectors, museums, and the general public to experience the iconic portfolio in a durable, meticulously crafted format that remains true to the spirit of the original. By bringing Jazz to a broader contemporary audience, the Braziller edition preserves the vitality, innovation, and emotional resonance of Matisse’s late work—ensuring that one of the most influential portfolios in modern art continues to inspire and captivate new generations.
