About the Item

Jack Bush (1909-1977) is known as one of Canada’s most successful abstract artists of the 20th century. In the 1960's he achieved international recognition for his works that positioned amongst the leading American artists associated with color-field painting. A graduate of Toronto’s OCAD (Ontario College of Art and Design), and a key member of the Painters Eleven, Bush was also hugely influential on the developing art scene of Toronto in the 1960's and 70's. Bush represented Canada at the 1967 Sao Paolo Biennale, and the Art Gallery of Ontario toured a retrospective of his work in 1976. During these two decades, Bush experienced commercial and critical success in New York and was continuously praised and promoted by the esteemed art critic, Clement Greenberg. As a result of their relationship, Bush would become friendly with several of the artists affiliated with the color-field movement including Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland. This iconic Bush print, from the legendary Toronto 20 portfolio, is a striking example of Bush's iconic style. The work features three broad planes of color, each vertically stacked and commanding the center of the page. Evocative of the best work in his career, this piece is defined by strong lines, soft shapes, passionate color tones, and a powerful simplicity. This example of this print came directly from an intact Toronto 20 portfolio that had never been framed. It is rare to find an example in such fine original condition. Untitled, from the Toronto 20 portfolio Canada, 1965 Silkscreen Signed, dated, and numbered by the artist From an edition of 100 26"H 20"W (sheet) Very good condition.
