Luigi Ghirri’s cinematic photography infused documentarian snapshots of the urban landscape with a sense of the surreal. His cropped, deadpan frames found humor in everyday life, and in the architecture of late 20th-century Italy in particular. At times compared to William Eggleston’s pioneering color photography and Lee Friedlander’s evocative street shots, Ghirri’s compositions gave meaning to the mundane textures, signs, and shapes that fill contemporary city life. Ghirri published a number of books in his lifetime, and his work has been exhibited in New York, Bologna, Milan, Paris, Berlin, Rome, and Los Angeles. His photographs belong in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Milan, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
