About the Item

Marc Chagall (1887–1985, France) Portfolio: The Fables of La Fontaine, 1952 Marc Chagall’s The Fables of La Fontaine is a masterful interpretation of Jean de La Fontaine’s classic 17th-century fables, blending poetic storytelling with Chagall’s dreamlike visual language. This rare edition, published by Tériade in Paris in 1952, features 100 handsigned etchings, each sequentially numbered 1–100, bringing to life the timeless allegories of human nature, morality, and wit. Chagall’s etchings capture the whimsical and often satirical spirit of La Fontaine’s fables, where animals take on human traits to reflect the virtues and follies of society. His fluid lines and imaginative compositions infuse the scenes with movement and emotion, offering a fresh and surreal perspective on these literary masterpieces. This edition is presented in its original format: two loose volumes in paper wrappers, with an etching printed on the front. The volumes are housed in a protective board cover with gray paper, featuring gold lettering on the spine, and a matching slipcase. The plates measure 11.6” × 9.75”, with sheets 16.38” × 13”, and the complete set measures 17.9” × 14.5” × 1.85”. This collection stands as a significant example of Chagall’s artistic interpretation of literary works, blending fantasy, humor, and profound symbolism.
