About the Item

Number 2 in an edition of 10. Titled, signed, numbered, and dated verso: Dirty Dishes / Don Joint / 2/10 / 2016. Medium: Hand-thrown glazed earthenware with photographic ceramic decal Don Joint’s 'Dirty Dishes' are a gentle slap in the face to Victorian morals still in existence today. While the female nude has long been an accepted and celebrated subject of art, depiction of the male nude has been, and for the most part continues to be, somewhat restrained, if not outright censored. Take the rating system of today’s film industry: female full frontal nudity gets an R rating; show a penis and the film is unrated; show an erection and the film is XXX. Today we see hundreds of ads with women in bras and panties, but rarely a man in briefs. Dirty Dishes is Don Joint’s playful, funny, and sometimes erotic attempt to break down these gender barriers. Don Joint is an interdisciplinary artist and curator who lives and works in New York. Born in Pennsylvania in 1956, Joint studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Chautauqua Institute. Joint's work can be found in many collections including of the Baltimore Museum of Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Akron Art Museum, the Toledo Museum of Art, and the Oklahoma Museum of Art.
