About the Item
This original 1950s poster by legendary French graphic artist Paul Colin announces “La Nuit de Mai à Bobino”—a festive gala evening held on Thursday, May 25th, at the iconic Parisian venue Bobino. The event was organized in aid of l’Entre-Aide des Rhumatisants, a charitable organization recognized for public utility, underscoring the era’s deep ties between art, culture, and social good.
At the center of the composition blooms a vibrant bouquet of lily of the valley (muguet)—the traditional French symbol of happiness and springtime, especially associated with May Day. The bright green and white of the flowers contrast delicately against a gradient blue background, evoking a sense of seasonal renewal and elegant festivity.
Behind the bouquet, silhouettes of dancers appear in motion, subtly sketched in soft outlines—an echo of movement, music, and joy, hinting at the lively performances and the spirit of camaraderie the evening promised.
The poster is signed by Paul Colin, one of the most influential graphic artists of the 20th century. Renowned for his Art Deco stylings and collaborations with the likes of Josephine Baker, Colin’s work spans theatre, cabaret, cinema, and social campaigns. His mastery lies in his ability to fuse bold typographic design with lyrical visual storytelling—as seen here in this understated yet captivating piece.
La Nuit de Mai à Bobino is not just a promotional poster—it’s a snapshot of post-war Parisian culture: stylish, generous, and full of hope. A rare and poetic work from one of France’s most beloved visual voices.

Paul Colin
Paul Colin (French , 1892-1985) was a French artist widely recognized for his imaginatively configured art deco posters depicting many well known theatre performers in Paris in the 1920's and 1930's, such as Josephine Baker and modernist figures and nudes. He also specialized in theatre sets, book designs, and costume design. Influenced by Cubism and jazz, he often employed a collage-like methodology to his work, juxtaposing highly stylized figural compositions against geometrically overlapping objects. He was a student of Valin and Prouvre. He created performance posters that were highly stylized, for studio, arts and dance. He was awarded an inspiring graphic artist and had his own unique style as he embraced symbolism and an abstract style.
