About the Item
RENJISHI is a hand drawn, limited edition lithograph by the renowned artist/caricaturist Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003) printed by hand using traditional lithography techniques on archival Arches printmaking paper. RENISHI depicts the white haired shishi, mythological lion-like animal who is the father character in this Kabuki dance drama. Hirschfeld masterfully expresses dramatic movement with the character's sweeping white hair, bold black and white dotted robe and fierce theatrical face makeup. Subtle textured strokes within the olive green background mirror the white maned lion dancer's boundless energy.

Albert Hirschfeld (June 21, 1903 – January 20, 2003) was an American caricaturist best known for his black and white portraits of celebrities and Broadway stars.
Al Hirschfeld spent more than 75 years attending Broadway plays and sketching the stars for The New York Times and other publications. Full of wit and verve, Hirschfeld's distinctively bold, curvy line drawings caricatured stars from Groucho Marx and Ethel Merman through Barbra Streisand and beyond. His first newspaper sketches appeared in the 1920s, and he continued working until his death in 2003, working in a converted barber chair in his New York City studio. After the 1945 birth of his daughter Nina, Al Hirschfeld began hiding her name in his drawings, often tucked into hair or shirt folds. Finding the Ninas became a pastime with Hirschfeld's fans, and after a time he added a number to his signature to indicate how many Ninas each drawing contained.
About RENJISHI(The Lion Dance) -
Renjishi is one of the most popular dances in the Japanese Kabuki theater, a parable about two shishi, mythological lion-like animals. The first version, played at the end of the Edo Period, in 1861, was Katsusaburô Renjishi, inspired in turn by a Noh theater play called Shakkyo (Stone Bridge).
Renjishi tells the story of a father shishi, represented in art with white hair, who, willing to test the power and the courage of his son, throws him off a cliff. The son survives the fall and manages to climb back, the play ending with a famous dance celebrating the sons’ achievement…

Albert Al Hirschfeld
For nearly 70 years, Al Hirschfeld created iconic caricatures of theater, film and television celebrities, capturing moments in time and documenting U.S. entertainment history in the process. Art historian Lloyd Goodrich called Hirschfeld “one of the few masters of graphic humor.” "New York Times" art critic John Russell dubbed him “the Fred Astaire of pen and ink.” Brendan Gill of "The New Yorker" stated, “To be a star on Broadway is to be drawn by Hirschfeld.” And many performers believed that, regardless of any other accolades they might achieve, “if Al Hirschfeld hasn’t drawn you, you don’t exist.” Hirschfeld began his career as a political cartoonist and became a theater caricaturist for "The New York Times" in 1925. He began creating his pure line drawings on a trip to Bali in the 1930s, and, over the course of his career, mastered the technique of using lines to capture the spirit and personality of his subjects. Hidden in each drawing is his daughter’s name, Nina, and so many people became obsessed with finding all of the Nina’s, that he developed a system of noting the number of Nina’s in each work next to his signature. In addition to "The New Yorker" and "The New York Times," Hirschfeld’s drawings appeared on playbills and posters as well as in advertisements. As a result of his work, he earned two Tony awards for lifetime achievement in theater and had a Broadway theater renamed in his honor.
