About the Item

Andy Warhol c.1968, "Now in Release from Andy Warhol Films" Rare sought-after original 1960s Warhol promo card published to index and advertise the films of Andy Warhol. Features the much fabled "spinner," which when turned, shows the titles of several key Warhol's films in Andy's mouth; each turn presents a corresponding film in the right lens of Warhol's sunglasses. Films/stills include: "Chelsea Girls, Four Stars, Lonesome Cowboys, Imitation of Christ, Bike Boy, I, Am Man, Loves of Ondine, The Nude Restaurant, and My Hustler. A historically significant and brilliantly composed, original 1960s Warhol collectible that should not be passed upon. Off-set printed in colors 8.25 x 9 inches (23 x 21.6 cm.) All-around fair condition with noticeable surface creasing. Rare from an unknown edition; few are known to have survived, especially with that of a working spin-wheel. A must have 1960s piece of Warhol ephemera. “OUR movies may have looked like home movies,” 'Andy Warhol wrote, responding to one of his critics, “but then our home wasn’t like anybody else’s.” From 1963 through 1968 Warhol shot hundreds of these home movies, work that is short and dauntingly long, silent and sound, scripted and improvised, often in black and white though also in color, still as death and alive to its moment. Awkward, beautiful, raw, spellbinding, radical — they are films like few others, in part because, first and foremost, they are also sublime art.' ( "With his films Warhol broke with the received ideas of what was possible — specifically, what cinema is and can be — much as he had helped do with his Pop paintings... The performers in his films play a shifting catalog of roles — biker boy, hustler, debutante, faded movie queen, aged grand artiste — that are simultaneously constructed and poignantly real... Though Warhol rarely appears on camera, the films feel profoundly autobiographical; they’re individualistic records of the world in which he played, made art and helped construct his own slippery, elusive identity. They are part ethnography, part memento mori and wholly personal." (Dargis, New York Times, 2007) Related Categories Andy Warhol ephemera. Warhol prints. Nico and the Velvet Underground.
