About the Item
This is from an open edition released over 24 hours. The print is double stamped from Graffiti Prints & Fin Dac.
Born in Cork, Ireland, but actively plying his trade worldwide, Fin DAC is a self-taught, non-conformist urban artist who has defined and perfected an atypical spray paint style he has dubbed Urban Aesthetics.
Through his work the artist explores themes related to female emancipation and empowerment, readjusting the male gaze and disrupting colonialist attitudes particularly surrounding the Eastern experience.
He is known for his depictions of Eurasian women and is inspired by traditional and ceremonial dressing, in which these subjects engage. His interest; however, is not superficial or thoughtless. In his illustration of these women, Fin DAC reframes racial and sexual stereotypes that surround them, crafting a narrative that celebrates their sensuality with cultural sensitivity, rather than appropriation.
When he works in an outdoor context, Fin DAC’s women are often large and commanding, claiming ownership over their urban environment, but also equally feminine, with classically delicate features. Through this duality, Fin DAC asserts that women are both powerful and vulnerable, aesthetic and intellectual, physically capable and with deep emotional reserves.
Although his murals are present in countries and continents all over the globe, Fin DAC remains very much an outsider of the street art scene preferring instead to plow his own, individual path with personal projects.
Fin DAC, born Finbarr Notte and also referred to as Finbarr DAC, is an Irish painter from Cork known for his depictions of Eurasian women. His passion for art started at an early age, just before he left Ireland to settle in London where he spent most of his life. Over the years, Fin DAC has managed to develop a unique style he calls « urban aesthetics ». DAC, meaning Dragon Armoury Creative, was a name found by a friend From China which first became the name of Fin DAC’s web portfolio. He kept his pseudonym when he started street art and used a dragon logo as a form of signature. Fascinated by Asian beauty, Notte’s work has no political message and only focuses on beauty and aesthetics. His depictions are women in ethnic clothes are mainly stencil-based, with a predominence of black and white and they all wear a mysterious mask painted with bright colour splashes. All of them are heavily influenced by Asian art, with inspiration in traditional and ceremonial dressing, and most of them are based on women the artist has met. As a self-taugh and non-conformist artist, his influences range from dark graphic novels through to the works of Francis Bacon and AubrThrough his work Fin DAC explores themes related to female emancipation and empowerment, while revealing their sensuality and sensitivity at the same time. The artist’s artwork aims to tackle racial and sexual stereotypes that surround women while readjusting the male gaze and former colonialist attitudes surrounding the Eastern experience. Fin DAC has collaborated with brands like Armani, G-Star, Red Bull and has painted for the Royal Albert Hall and the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He has exhibited his work in galleries and museums mainly in Europe but also in the USA, and has painted murals in USA, Canada, Mexico, France, UK, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Cambodia, Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti.

Very rare stateside. Other editions of this work are in the permanent collections of major institutions like the British museum, which has the following explanation: "The artist Jim Dine and his wife Nancy were close to Kitaj and his family, especially after the death of Elsi, Kitaj's first wife in 1969. They sometimes stayed with the Dines at their farm in Vermont during Kitaj's second teaching sojourn in the United States. Dine and Kitaj held a joint show at the Cincinnati Museum of Art in 1973. In the catalogue both artists contributed an insightful 'essay' on each other with Dine stressing Kitaj's obsession with all things American and baseball-related...' The alternate title, "O'Neill accuses Faulkner of lack of loyalty and support" can be seen on the artwork itself, and clearly is some kind of inside joke among friends. By the way -- do you see the way the colored dots are placed over the figures? Kitaj was doing this well before Baldessari who made it famous; that's how pioneering he was at the time.

Ronald Brooks (RB) Kitaj Biography
R.B. (Ronald Brooks) Kitaj was born in 1932 in Cleveland Ohio. One of the most prominent painters of his time, particularly in England where he spent some four decades spanning the late 1950s through the late 1990s, Kitaj is considered a key figure in European and American contemporary painting. While his work has been considered controversial, he is regarded as a master draughtsman with a commitment to figurative art. His highly personal paintings and drawings reflect his deep interest in history; cultural, social and political ideologies; and issues of identity.
Part of an extraordinary cohort who emerged from the Royal College of Art circa 1960, which included Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield, and David Hockney, Kitaj was immediately pegged as one of its leading figures. The London Times greeted his first solo show in 1963 as a long-awaited and galvanizing event: “Mr. R.B. Kitaj’s first exhibition, now that it has at last taken place, puts the whole ‘new wave’ of figurative painting in this country during the last two or three years into perspective.” In 1976, KItaj curated the exhibition The Human Clay, and in the essay he wrote for it he proposed the existence of a “School of London”—a label which stuck to a group of painters that includes Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud, Leon Kossoff, Michael Andrews...
