About

"The Lady Mary after Queen" portrait etching and stipple engraving, printed in color on pink paper and hand finished, from "The Book of Imitations of Original Drawings by Hans Holbein in the Collection of His Majesty" by Francesco Bartollozzi (1728–1815), after a drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/8 - 1543) in the 16th century. It was published by John Chamberlaine in London in 1793. This is a portrait of Mary Tudor, the daughter of King Henry VIII and his 1st wife, Queen Catherine of Aragon, drawn when she was a princess, before she became queen as Mary I. Bartolozzi's portrait is after a drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543), the artist in the court of Henry VIII. Lady Mary is depicted half length, looking to her right, wearing pearls and angular headwear of a lady in the royal English court in the 16th century. The engraving is presented in a brown colored wood frame with a beaded gold colored inner trim detail and a light cream color French mat.The frame measures 25.13" x 19.13" x .88". Inscription: At top left: "The Lady Mary after Queen", below the image "In his Majesty's Collection", and production detail: "From the original drawing by Hans Holbein/Engraved by F Bartolozzi RA Historical Engraver to His Majesty / Published as the Act directs June 20. 1796 by I. Chamberlaine Brompton Row Knightsbridge". This portrait is held by multiple museums, including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The British Museum, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Chicago Art Institute.
