About the Item

A superb example of the Matisse’s mastery of line, restraint, and psychological nuance. The sitter, a young girl rendered with the most economical of strokes, emerges from the page with a striking presence. Though sparse in execution, every line is considered, and every curve, whether in the fall of her hair, the tilt of her head, or the simplicity of her dress, conveys a quiet vitality. The lightness of touch is signature Matisse: lyrical, fluid, and without pretension, yet brimming with poetic power. The background, dotted with rhythmic marks, brings a sense of atmosphere and motion, lifting the portrait into a more dreamlike realm. This etching occupies a significant place in Matisse’s graphic work, created during a period of extraordinary creative evolution. By 1914, Matisse had already upended traditional modes of representation through his bold Fauvist canvases, but in his prints and drawings, he continued to refine a language of simplicity rooted in classical balance and emotional resonance. In “Grande Irène Vignier,” we see the essence of his portraiture - intimate, observational, yet abstracted enough to transcend the individual. The subtle bow in the girl’s hair and the suggestion of a smile draw us into her world, while the reserved composition leaves room for interpretation and imagination. The subject, Irène Vignier, was the daughter of renowned antiquarian Charles Vignier. Charles was not only a close friend of Matisse but also was responsible for introducing Asian and African arts to the avantgarde artists in Paris in the early 20th century. Irène appears in several drawings and prints by Matisse from this era. In this particular work, she is not idealized but presented with an honesty and sensitivity that speak to the artist’s profound respect for his models. Unlike the grand oil portraits of the academic tradition, this etching is deeply human and quite radical for its time. It reflects Matisse’s belief that a true likeness is not in precision of detail, but in the ability to capture spirit and presence with the fewest marks possible. This is a philosophy inherited from Japanese printmakers (like those Irène’s father, Charles, would have introduced to him) and distilled through his own uniquely modern lens. This work is an etching on chine colle and is signed by Matisse in pencil in the lower right. It is further inscribed “etat” in the lower right - this example being a state proof aside from the numbered edition of 15. This print is recorded as number 19 in Duthuit’s catalogue raisonne of Matisse’s graphic work. It is housed in a wonderful antique hand carved frame by M. Grieve Co. in New York and London. In the early 20th century, Grieve produced some of the finest hand carved frames for clients that included the Vanderbilts, Whitneys, Astors, and Andrew Mellon. Their woodworkers also worked on the interiors of the Titanic. This particular example descended in the Matisse family collection from Henri down to Jacquelyn Miller Matisse (1940-2018). Other impressions of this work are housed in the permanent collections at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
