About the Item
Highly detailed and realistic portrait lithograph of the modernist watercolor artist Sam Colburn (American, 1909-1993) by Jack Coughlin (American, b. 1932). Numbered, titled, and signed along bottom edge ("31/40 Sam Colburn, Jack Coughlin"). Presented in a new cream mat with foam-core backing. Image size: 8"H x 7"W.
Sam Colburn, 1909 - 1993 made landscapes of the rolling hills around Carmel and Salinas valleys, as well, landscapes that embodied the poetic yearning of Robinson Jeffers. Jeffers Territory (1942) shows Colburn's tremendous feeling for the land--the haunting, sublime beauty of the coastal terrain and the surging restlessness of the sea. He filled his landscapes with voids and mists, out of which freely arose his forms and structural elements.
Jack Coughlin (American, b. 1932) - artist, professor, and music aficionado - was born in Greenwich, CT on February 19, 1932 and now resides in Wellfleet, MA. Coughlin, who is Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is mostly known for his skill as a printmaker, but he is equally adept in media such as pencil, watercolor, oil, and, low relief bronze sculpture in the ancient lost wax casting technique used by the old masters. His printmaking media is as diverse as his subject matter: etching, engraving, aquatint, woodcut, and lithography - as well as non graphic media - are used to create birds, animals, landscapes, marine, and portraits of the famous and not-so-famous.
Coughlin's academic and illustrative style ranges from realism to surrealism and grotesque. He works in series producing portraits of literary and musical figures such as Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, George Bernard Shaw, William Butler Yeats, Little Walter, Big Walter Horton, Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller), and James Cotton. His love of the harmonica and blues music gave rise to a series of twenty-six pencil and watercolor portraits published as "A Brush with the Blues" that, according to Joe Burns of the "Provincetown Banner", paid honor to his musical mentors. In addition to his private work, Coughlin receives many commission requests and his art has been used to illustrate books of poetry.
Coughlin studied at the Art Students League in New York City. Later, he earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1954 and a Master of Arts in 1961 at the Rhode Island School of Design. For the next thirty years, in addition to creating art, he distinguished himself as a professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
His memberships include the National Academy of Design in NYC; the Society of American Graphic Artists in NYC; the Boston Printmakers in MA; and the Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, CT.
Coughlin has had solo exhibits throughout the United States - including the Ainsworth Gallery in Boston, MA and the Silvermine Guild; the David Hendriks Gallery in Dublin, Ireland; and the galleria Villa Schifanio in Florence, Italy. Since his first exhibit in 1959, Coughlin has won awards such as the E. K. Sloane Purchase Award, 21st American Drawing Biennial, Norfolk Museum, 1965; first prize for printmaking, 60th Annual Exhibit, Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Wadsworth Athenaeum in CT, 1970; H. P. Shope Purchase Award, Society of American Graphic Artists, 51st Print Exhibit, 1971.
He also exhibited at the American Drawing Biennials in 1962, 1964, and 1966; the Contemporary Artists Eligible for Awards at the National Institute of Arts and letters, NYC, in 1970; the 17th Biennial American Printmaking at the Brooklyn Museum, NY, in 1971; the 150th Annual Exhibition at the National Academy of Design, in 1975; the 3rd Norwegian International Print Biennial in 1976; the 4th International Exhibition of Graphic Art, Frechen, Germany; and the Associated American Artists, NYC, in the 1970s.
Recent exhibits and displays include the Kenny Gallery in Galaway, Ireland; the Fine Arts Gallery 34 at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigue, NY; and the R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton, MA.
Some of the museums and institutions represented by Jack Coughlin's work include the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC; the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in NYC; the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences in VA; the National Collection of Fine Art in Washington, DC; the Worcester Museum of Art in MA; the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, GA; the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman, OK; the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Jacksonville, FL; the Frederick and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, FL; the Wright Museum of Art in Beloit, WI; the Frederick R. View AllOld Violinist - Late 19th Century Figurative Lithograph
By John George Brown
Located in Soquel, CA
Finely detailed late 19th century chromo-lithograph portrait of a violinist street musician by John George Brown (British, 1831-1913). Many of Brown’s paintings were reproduced in lithography (Chromo-lithograpy), as is the case with the one offered here. Presented in a rustic antique Oak wood frame with giltwood fillet. Image, 15.63"H x 10.63"W.
John George Brown was a British citizen and an American painter born in Durham, England. His parents apprenticed him to the career of glass worker at the age of fourteen, in an attempt to dissuade him from pursuing painting. He studied nights at the School of Design in Newcastle-on-Tyne while working as a glass cutter there between 1849 and 1852, and evenings at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh while working at the Holyrood Glass Works between 1852 ad 1853. After moving to New York City in 1853, he studied with Thomas Seir Cummings at the National Academy of Design where he was elected a National Academician in 1861. Brown was the Academy’s vice-president from 1899 to 1904.
Around 1855, he worked for the owner of the Brooklyn Glass Company, and later he married the daughter of his employer. His father-in-law encouraged his artistic abilities, supporting him financially, letting Brown pursue painting full-time. In 1866, he became one of the charter members of the Water-Color Society, of which he was president from 1887 to 1904. Brown became famous for his depictions of street urchins found of the streets of New York (bootblacks, street musicians, posy sellers, newsboys, etc.).
Brown’s art is best characterized as British genre painting...

Buffalo Bill 1899 Original Battle of San Juan Hill 1 sheet of a 24 sheet poster
Located in Southampton, NY
This rare original lithograph print is from 1899. It is one sheet of a huge 24 sheet poster that was created in 1899 to announce Buffalo Bills Wild West. The size of the complete 24 sheet poster would have been approx. 10 feet tall by 20 feet wide and would have been posted on barns and buildings in 1899 to promote Buffalo Bills Wild West before it would come to towns. This 1 sheet of the 24 sheet lithograph is in such good condition because it was found in the Lithographers draws of the print shop that created the poster. It is black and white because it was a proof that was used to create the final layout of the color poster. It indicates on the image that it is No. 2 Buffalo Bill San Juan Hill 1899, so it would have been the 2nd poster down on the left side of the large total image comprised of 24 separate sheets all unique to create the full image. You can see the two black printed lines on the left side indicate where the edge of the poster would have been. We have never seen a complete image of this rare 1899 poster. When we first acquired this rare proof over 20 years ago, we contacted the The Ringling Museum in Florida that houses a large Buffalo Bill poster...
