About the Artist:
(1877-1968) Dutch-French
Van Dongen was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands where he studied at the Akademie voor Beelende Kunsten of Rotterdam where he created somber-toned, Rembrandt inspired landscapes. He moved to Paris in 1897 where he frequented the bars and cabarets of Montmartre and soon found affiliation amongst the Fauvists Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, and André Derain. Van Dongen was known for his vibrant paintings and prints of almond-eyed women and bourgeois leisure scenes, some of his most notable work depicting fashionable celebrities, including Brigitte Bardot. His use of color and expressive line became integral to his style and in 1926 he was inducted into the French Legion of Honor. Today his works are held in the collections of the MoMA in New York, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris.

Kees van Dongen
The Dutch painter Kees van Dongen began his career as a poor young artist with no formal training who happened to encounter art by chance. Van Dongen’s distinctive style later earned him a place amongst the most fashionable artists of his generation. He was particularly famous in Paris during the 20s and 30s and was best known for depicting the modern woman. At the beginning of his career, van Dongen painted dancers and cabaret girls. Eventually, he moved to a studio, where he would host parties and balls and began to paint society women.
Van Dongen’s work can be found in the world’s most prestigious collections, such as the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza of Madrid, the Museum of Modern Art in New York or the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

About the Artist:
José Luis Cuevas is a Mexican artist who worked primarily with etchings, illustrations, sculptures, and paintings, though he is perhaps best known for his drawings. According to Cuevas, “perhaps because I was born in a paper mill and pencil factory, paper has always had a great fascination for me.” He briefly attended the eminent Mexican institution Escuela de Pintura, however Cuevas considers himself a self-taught draughtsman in search of an alternative to the Mexican Muralists and their social messages. For Cuevas, his drawings represent the isolation of man and an inability to communicate, many of his drawings featuring distorted human figures and figures transformed into animals. This is an original 19th century 1st edition octavo hand-colored McKenney and Hall lithograph of a Native American entitled " Shar-I-Tar-Ish, A Pawnee Chief", lithographed by J. T. Bowen after a painting by Charles Bird King and published by Rice and Hart in Philadelphia in 1848. Shar-I-Tar-Ish's portrait has a reddish hue from the feathers in his headdress and amulet chain, with a brownish taupe color of the upper trim of his costume. He is wearing his presidential peace medal. He has a very serious and thoughtful expression.
This original McKenney and Hall hand-colored lithograph is printed on a sheet measuring 10.38" high and 7" wide. There are faint smudges in the margins. The print is otherwise in very good condition. The original descriptive text pages, 33-34, from McKenney and Hall's 19th century publication are included.
