Lithograph in colors on paper. Hand signed and numbered by Max Papart. Image size 31 x 25 inches. Sheet size 39 x 31 inches. Frame size approx 44 x 37 inches. Edition of 90.

About the artist: Max Papart was a French painter and printmaker. He is best known for his depictions of circus performers, birds, figures, still lifes, and landscapes in a colorful Cubist style. Papart’s work captured the joy of life through a sense of movement, cheerful hues, and lighthearted subject matter. Born on December 19, 1911 in Marseilles, France, the artist studied at the School of Fine Arts in Marseilles before moving to Paris in 1936, where he began exhibiting at the Salon des Indepedants. In the years 1969–1973, he taught printmaking at the University of Paris VIII in Vincennes. The artist died on August 29, 1994 in Paris, France. Today, Papart’s works are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the National Gallery in London, among others.

Max Papart
Max Papart (1911-1994), was born in Marseille, France and later moved to Paris where he learned the techniques of classic engraving. One of the most intriguing intellectual concepts which Papart achieved is a "window" through which the viewer senses the past or future, or even another time or place. It has been said that Papart does not "paint," he "composes." His compositions come together in a symphony of line, shape and colour. Papart always believed that each painting has its own meaning and needed no interpretation from him. His paintings, in his own words, 'force the viewer to think, and it is for the viewer to respond to the art based on his own personal experiences (Rogallery). Papart's original art pieces such as this one are auctioned at the world's most prominent houses and are eminently collectible. You will find his works often sold side-by-side with Picassos, Chagals and Braques.
