Rare vintage limited edition Stone Lithograph printed at Mourlot in Paris. this is from a signed and numbered portfolio but the individual sheets are not hand signed and numbered.
Francois Gilot, (1921-) studied English Literature at Cambridge University, and then,
encouraged by her father, studied international law, though she
secretly also took art lessons at the same time. In 1943, during her
first exhibition in Paris, Gilot (then 21) met Pablo Picasso (who was
61) for the first time. In 1946, Gilot started a 10-year relationship
with the notorious womanizer and had two of his children,Claude and
Paloma. As a result of her relationship with Picasso, Gilot "became
both a witness and a participant in one of the last great periods of
the modern art movement in Europe. Their circle included poets,
philosophers, writers, and many of the legends of the art world, such
as Braque, Chagall, Cocteau and Matisse. In 1953, Gilot left Picasso
and the home they shared in Vallauris and moved back to Paris.
"Lithographs are printed from stones and each stone is an echo of my
artistic voice," said Gilot. "Many artists use their art as a personal
catharsis. I have never done that. I am more intellectual. Each
artistic process -- oils, lithographs, monotypes -- allows me a
different freedom and suits a different mood." While Gilot did her
first lithograph in 1950 at the Mourlot Atelier, the same studio used
by Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Jean Miro and Jean Dubuffet,
it was in the 1970s that she really began to experiment with the
process.
"In the beginning I turned to lithography because I wanted to show off
my technical skills. Now I am more interested in color," said Gilot.
"I also thought that lithographs would make my works more accessible
to young collectors." While her oils are priced up to $100,000, her
lithographs begin at $2,000 and her monotypes range from $1,000 to
$2,500.

Matisse's striking linocut shows Alexina "Teeny" Duchamp, the second wife of artist and pioneer of the ready-made, Marcel Duchamp. She was married to Pierre Matisse, Henri Matisse's eldest son, first and they had three children, Jacqueline, Paul and Peter. They separated in 1949 but Matisse was incredibly fond of his daughter-in-law until his death in 1954.
Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) is primarily known as the founder of the Fauvist movement, a result of Impressionism, whose works fundamentally altered the course of Modern Art in the late 20th Century. Innovative in his original treatment of the human figure and an expressive use of color, Matisse forged his own pictorial language. Matisse's career can be divided into several stylistic periods, but he remained focused on discovering “the essential character of things” through his art.
Matisse considered his drawing to be a very intimate means of expression. The method of artistic execution — whether it was charcoal, pencil, crayon, etcher’s burin, lithographic tusche or paper cut — varied according to the subject and personal circumstance. His favorite subjects were evocative or erotic — the female form, the nude figure or a beautiful head of a favorite model.

The present artwork is an original etching by American artist Leonard Baskin. Here, he presents a portrait of the Flemish Renaissance artist Peter Breughel the Elder in profile, executed after the engraving by Johannes Wierix published in 1572 by Volcxken Diericx and Hieronymus Cock. In the portrait, Baskin displays a love of line and texture, using the etching technique to exaggerate and draw attention to the wrinkles of the face, while leaving the hair and clothing like a study or sketch. Like in the work of contemporary artist Claude Weisbuch, the result for Baskin is an image that recalls the old masters and displays the mastery of contemporary printmakers, but that also places mid-century formal concerns at the forefront of portraiture and figuration.

Born in 1922 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Baskin was reared in Brooklyn, New York. The son of a Rabbi, Baskin was educated at a yeshiva (Jewish religious college), which had a profound effect on his aesthetic. Committed to art at an early age, Baskin had his first exhibition. of sculpture, at the Glickman Studio Gallery, New York, at the age of seventeen. He studied at Yale University from 1941 to 1943 and received his B.A. at the New School for Social Research in 1949. Baskin spent 1950 and 1951 abroad, studying in Paris and Florence. In 1953 he began teaching printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where he remained until 1974. It was while he was at Smith College that he founded Gehenna Press, a small private press specializing in fine book production. He moved to England in 1974 and stayed till 1983 when he returned to America.. These nine years were enormously productive and besides sculptures he created a fine selection of prints and paintings. Baskin became intrigued by Greek history, philosophy and mythology at an early age and this study inspired many of his sculptures and paintings. In very good condition aside from two vary small abraded areas at the bottom right of the image.
This is one of several portrait heads of distingushed Mexican public figures that Siqueiros did in lithography which were published by Weyhe. Most of them share the characteristic of making the head the entire composition, creating the effect of monumental sculpture. Moises Saenz was an educator who was influenced by the theories and philosophy of John Dewey.
