Sensitive, realistically drawn artist self portrait of Mr. Soyer as an older man wearing a hat, dark framed eyeglasses, gray jacket, light blue shirt and tie. His somber facial expression portrays a candid and true to life likeness of Mr. Soyer as a senior citizen.
Excellent impression, neutral and pastel color palette, unframed, superb condition, from the master printers private collection.

Raphael Soyer(December 25, 1899 – November 4, 1987) was a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker who believed that "if art is to survive, it must describe and express people, their lives and times. It must communicate."
Soyer is best known for picturing poverty stricken victims of the Great Depression in New York City, also for creating images of everyday urban life and of the nude female body.

Raphael Soyer
Raphael Soyer, a Russian-born artist, was best known for his compassionate, naturalistic depictions of urban subjects. His sensitive, penetrating portrayals include a broad range of city dwellers, dancers, shoppers, office workers and fellow artists. Historically, Soyer is associated with the social realist artists of the 1930s, whose art championed the cause of social justice. Soyer was referred to as an American scene painter. He is identified as a Social Realist because of his interest in men and women viewed in contemporary settings which included the streets, subways, salons and artists' studios of New York City. He also wrote several books on his life and art. His brothers Moses and Issac were also notable artists.
