‘A Garden of Love’ comprises of six colour variations of Robert Indiana’s emblematic, square ‘LOVE’ composition. ‘LOVE’ is one of the most recognisable images of the American Pop Art movement and was a pioneering piece of hard-edged abstraction - an approach to painting that became widespread in the 1960s and is characterised by areas of flat colour with sharp, clear (or ‘hard’) edges. ‘A Garden of Love’ is just one of a number of adaptions of the original 1964 design. ‘LOVE’ has been translated into different languages, alphabets, and mediums – most famously into a series of vibrant, large scale public sculptures.
First created in 1964 for the Museum of Modern Art’s Christmas card that year, ‘LOVE’ quickly became the most popular greetings card the museum had ever produced and was later adapted for the design for a national stamp. The straightforward and socio-political overtones of the message of ‘LOVE’, are irrevocably emblematic of 1960s optimism and even became associated with the anti-war movement in America during this time which Indiana strongly supported. The artist makes reference to the ‘flower power’ generation, from which the concept of ‘LOVE’ first sprang, by naming each of the colour variations in ‘A Garden of Love’ after a type of flower: Tulip, Lily, Zinnia, Rose, Phlox and Lilac.

Robert Indiana
Robert Indiana's work evolved into hard-edged graphic images of words, logos and typographic forms, earning him a reputation as one of the country's leading contemporary artists.
Indiana is known for using public signs and symbols with altered lettering to make stark and challenging visual statements. In his prints, paintings and constructions, he gave new meaning to basic words like Eat, Die and Love. Using them in bold block letters in vivid colors, he enticed his viewers to look at the commonplace from a new perspective. One indication of his success was the appearance of his immensely popular multi-colored Love on a United States postage stamp in 1973.

Anthony Velonis (1911-1997) was an extremely innovative artist. He learned the technique of screen printing, also known as silkscreen, (for which he also coined the term serigraphy) while working with a wall paper manufacturer.
Unusual for fine prints, the image is made by the artist in the same direction as it will print, as the colored inks are forced through fabric (silk) directly onto a paper surface. (He also invented a machine that could print onto column-shaped items such as cocktail glasses or make-up bottles and a rack system for drying sheets of paper with wet ink in which the sheets are just inches apart.)
The technique allows extreme versatility on the part of the artist and the ink tends to sit on top of the paper rather than soak into the fibers. In 1934 Velonis used this new technique on Mayor LaGuardia's NYC Poster...
