For over six decades, Alex Katz has found inspiration in all types of flowers, transforming wind-blown tiger lilies, marigolds, roses, and petunias into iconic works of Pop art. In the 1950s, Katz grew frustrated that his portraits lacked a sense of movement, so he began painting the wildflowers he discovered near his summer home in Maine. “When I did the first figure groups, The Cocktail Party and Lawn Party, I felt they didn’t move enough,” he said about this moment of inspiration. “And that’s one of the reasons I did the large flower paintings.” Over time, Katz’s floral renditions became more vibrant and alive, often featuring stems growing in every direction, petals cascading through the air, and leaves scattered across the composition. “You can’t look at any one thing for any length of time, your eye is moving all over the place in continuous motion,” he explained. A remarkable 71 inches long, Katz’s Red Tulips (1967) is among the artist’s top auction records, selling for $690,600 at Sotheby’s in 2007.
This dazzling silkscreen print was created in 1992 by the Vera List print program to raise funds for Lincoln Center. It's a limited edition - uniquely signed.
This work was, exceptionally, boldly signed, inscribed and dated in black marker in 2016 by Alex Katz. This exquisite print is very uncommon when hand signed by the artist; It would look great in any room in the home or office. A terrific value and a great present.

Instead of observing flowers in nature, Andy Warhol found his botanical inspiration in a 1964 issue of Modern Photography. He transformed a photograph of hibiscus blossoms into a technicolor series of silkscreens, each simply titled Flowers and debuted at the influential Leo Castelli Gallery later that same year. Silkscreens from that exhibition have since sold for over $2 million at auction. While they evoke the Flower Power movement of the 1960s, Warhol’s Flowers have also be interpreted as a symbol of mourning, as the artist created these works just after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination...

“Yellow Tulips” is part of the famous flower painting series by Alex Katz. The aesthetics of flowers such as flags, tulips, and roses has been continuously explored by the artist throughout his career.
"I generally start with oil sketches, because I can paint more quickly than I can draw. In this way I try to capture the sensation of what I’m doing, getting into the unconscious and creating the images, and then figuring out what I did." — Alex Katz
Katz has been painting flowers since the 1960s, often during his summer residencies in Maine. The cropped, flattened composition displays a debt to Japanese woodblock art printing. The American artist is well-known for his large paintings, whose bold simplicity and unmodulated colours are now seen as precursors of Pop Art.
"Yellow Tulips" is another of Katz's wonderfully bright exploration of nature and the landscape. He represents the volumes and colors created by the natural light, this artwork breathes nature, the radiant yellow delights the vision against the limitless black background.
The painting “Tulips 4” which this edition is based on belongs to the Collection of Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
