About the Item

Mid Century French Lithograph and Pochoir print on velum Arches paper after Andre Derain from the 1961 editions d'Art du Lion from the original painting of 1946. The work is signed 'dans la planche'. Presented under a cut card and cloth mount ready for framing. This striking artwork showcases a vibrant bouquet of flowers in a sleek, black vase, set against a dark, moody background. The flowers, bursting with vivid orange, yellow, and pink hues, create a captivating contrast with the deep backdrop, emphasizing their lively presence. Intricately detailed petals and delicate stems display the artist’s attention to realism and texture, drawing viewers into the composition. The arrangement's asymmetry adds a dynamic quality, as smaller flowers and greenery extend outward, creating a sense of movement. A subtle play of light enhances the richness of the colours and adds depth to the vase's glossy surface, casting gentle shadows that ground the bouquet. This piece stands out for its masterful balance of colour, light, and form, making it a timeless and enchanting portrayal of natural beauty. André Derain began painting at a very young age, notably alongside Maurice de Vlaminck, with whom he painted en plein air in the vicinity of Paris. In 1905, after a summer spent with Henri Matisse in Collioure, he was one of the "Fauvist" painters at the Salon d'Automne of the same year, an exhibition that revealed him to the public and to the avant-garde. In 1909, the dealer Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler commissioned him to create woodcuts to illustrate Guillaume Apollinaire's L’Enchanteur Pourrissant. In 1911, after brief Cubist experiments, Derain changed his style and returned to tradition. On the front during the First World War among many other artists, Derain no longer painted, but his reputation continued to grow in Paris. Indeed, in 1916, the young Paul Guillaume exhibited his work in his gallery on Avenue de Villiers in Paris. In 1919, he was asked by the director of the Ballets Russes Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929) to create the sets for the ballet La Boutique Fantasque. This was the beginning of a career as a decorator that lasted until 1953. André Derain was perceived in the 1920s as the best representative of the French tradition and in 1928 received the Carnegie Prize, which gave him great international prestige. Derain remained under contract with Paul Guillaume from 1923 until the latter's death.

The Tulips, Art Deco Still Life Oil on Canvas of Tulips in a Vase in an Interior
Located in Cotignac, FR
French Art Deco still life of a vase of tulips in an interior by Auguste Mallard. The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a period patinated wood frame. A colourful and strong painting of an interior view, a table with books and as the centre piece a beautiful blue ceramic vase with twisted handles holding a magnificent bouquet of brightly coloured tulips. Mallard has captured the abandon of the blooms in the vase, the way tulips twist and furl raising and lowering their beautiful colourful petals. The colours of the flowers really stand out against the more muted tones of the background, curtain and table. A very elegant and stylish painting. This painting has the feel of some of the still life works from the same period by Tamara de Lempicka who was a contemporary of Mallard painting...
