Paul Sarkisian (1928-)
1971 Brown Landscape Lithograph Silkscreen Print
on calendred BFK Rives fine art paper. small edition of 15 from Tamarind print workshop with their blindstamp. Hand signed and numbered.
Paul Sarkisian (1928-) is an American artist who made significant contributions during the growth of contemporary art in Los Angeles, then later gained international recognition as a leading photorealist painter.
Sarkisian’s work has been exhibited in many of the world's most important museums and public venues, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, DOCUMENTA, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Carnegie Institute, The Chicago Arts Club, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian Institution... and many others.
Sarkisian was among the few artists to exhibit in all major venues overseen by pioneering curator Walter Hopps during his seminal Los Angeles period. These include The Syndell Studio in 1954, Action Painting 1 (Merry-Go-Round-Show) in 1955, Action Painting 2 (Action Squared) in 1956, The Ferus Gallery in 1957 and The Pasadena Art Museum in 1961, 63 and 68.
Sarkisian’s work has undergone numerous and sweeping stylistic changes, from the Abstract Expressionist canvases he exhibited at the Ferus Gallery in the 1950's, to the vivid surrealistic nudes he produced in the 1960's, to trompe l’oeil and minimalist paintings of the 1980's and 90's. In 1969 he began work on a series of Photorealist paintings depicting full-scale storefront and house facades. These monumental black-and-white canvases helped to establish Sarkisian's reputation as a leading New-Realist painter during the movement's heyday in the 1970's and 80’s. Throughout this period Sarkisian often exhibited with a core group of painters associated with the era, such as Chuck Close, Ralph Goings and Richard Estes. In the 1990’s Sarkisian changed style once again to produce large-scale structural paintings incorporating shaped panels, tinted resin and industrial enamel. Paul Sarkisian studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Otis Art Institute and Mexico City College. A fixture of the Los Angles art scene of the 1950s and ’60s he moved with his wife Carol and son Peter to Cerrillos, New Mexico in 1971, shortly after an invitation to create a portfolio of prints at the Tamarind Institute. They published Garo Antreasian, Ruth Asawa, Squeak Carnwath, Richard Diebenkorn, Walton Ford, William Kentridge, Ed Ruscha, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Kiki Smith and Donald Sultan.
His career is marked by many stylistic changes as he has worked as an abstract expressionist, photo realist, and minimalist painter over his seventy-year career as an artist."Yellow, Executed at Anderson Ranch with Peter Catanzaro" This piece was executed with Styria Studio during the 1980s and bears the hallmarks of the bright colors of that period seen in the works of Ettore Sottsass, Peter Shire and the Memphis Milano artists. He worked with Styria, A NYC printer working with the finest artists. Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain, Jim Dine, Mark di Suvero, Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist, George Segal, Richard Serra, Keith Sonnier, Richard Stankiewicz, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, and Robert Whitman.

Original color lithographs on BFK Rives paper,
1966, Hand signed and numbered 29/36 in pencil,
Sheet size 20.5 x 15 inches.
Karl E. Fortess (1907-1993) was a painter, printmaker and teacher, of Boston, Massachusetts and Woodstock, N.Y. Fortess was born in Antwerp, Belgium on October 13, 1907, and became an American citizen in 1923. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League in New York, and the Woodstock School of Painting with Yasuo Kuniyoshi. In 1937 the Works Progress Administration sent him and several other artists to Alaska to document the towns, villages, and remote wilderness landscapes (Pemberton, “Alaska art museum collects WPA’s Depression works from the territory,” Columbia Daily Tribune, November 9, 2003). Trains, trucks, and industrial buildings were what Karl Fortess envisioned when the Public Works of Art Project suggested that he depict “the American Scene.” His work bears the influence of Surrealism, Russsian Constructivist art and Cubism. He was part of a circle of left leaning artists loosley involved with the WPA which included Sol Wilson, Isaac Soyer, Louis Lozowick, Abraham Harriton, Ben Shahn, William Gropper, Nahum Tschacbasov, Morris Shulman, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Louis Slobodkin, Adolf Dehn, Le Corbusier and Louis Schanker.
Karl Fortress taught at the Art Students League, Brooklyn Museum Art School, Louisiana State University, Fort Wright College, and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts. He was a member of the Artists Equity Association, Society of American Graphic Artists, American Association of University Professors, and the British Film Institute. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1946, was named an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1960 and elected to full Academician in 1971. Fortess taught at many different schools, including Boston University School of Fine Art, where he also created an archive of interviews with more than two hundred and fifty contemporary American painters, sculptors, and graphic artists including many with with artists associated with the Woodstock, N.Y. art community.
Among the interviewees are Kenneth Armitage, Will Barnet, Romare Bearden, George Biddle, James Brooks, Adolph Dehn, Jane Freilicher, Julian Levi, Alice Neel, Larry Rivers, Moses Soyer, Dorothy Varian...
