The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch, meaning "stork", was a small German liaison aircraft built by Fieseler before and during World War II. It was notable for its excellent short-takeoff-and-landing performance and low stall speed of 31 mph.
The Storch was deployed in all European and North African theaters of World War II. In addition to its liaison function, a number were used to fly a battalion of Infantry Regiment Grossdeutschland behind enemy lines during the invasion of Belgium.
In 1943, the Storch played a role in Operation Eiche, the rescue of deposed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from a boulder-strewn mountain-top near the Gran Sasso...

This Kawasaki Ki-61 (known as "Tony" in the Allied code) was the only fighter with a liquid-cooled engine that the Japanese Army Air Force put into the field during World War II. It was this that made the Tony so unlike the other Japanese planes that the Allies believed it to be German- or Italian-made. While the engine was a license-built version of a German Daimler Benz engine, the rest of the aircraft was an all-Japanese design. The Tony proved to be a match for Allied fighters, due chiefly to its particularly heavy armament, good protective armour, and high speed dives. The Ki-61 was one of the few interceptors that could reach the same altitude as the the American B-29 Superfortresses (posters of which are also available).
When the Tony entered combat during 1943, it could outrun, outdive and outclimb every Allied fighter except the P-38 Lightning. It was the first fighters to be equipped with fuel tank...

The Ventura was a twin-engine medium bomber and patrol bomber of World War II. It first entered combat in Europe as a bomber with the RAF in late 1942. Designated PV-1 by the United States Navy (US Navy), it entered combat in 1943 in the Pacific. The Martin PBM Mariner was an American patrol bomber flying boat of World War II and the early Cold War era. It was designed to complement the Consolidated PBY Catalina and PB2Y Coronado in service. A total of 1,366 were built, with the first example flying on 18 February 1939 and the type entering service in September 1940.
The first PBM-1s entered service with Patrol Squadron Fifty-Five of the United States Navy on 1 September 1940. Prior to the USA's entry into World War II, PBMs were used to carry out Neutrality Patrols in the Atlantic, including operations from Iceland. Following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, PBMs were used on anti-submarine patrols, sinking their first German U-boat, U-158, on 30 June 1942. PBMs were responsible, wholly or in part, for sinking a total of ten U-boats during World War II. PBMs were also heavily used in the Pacific War, operating from bases at Saipan, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and the South West Pacific.
The National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C owns the only surviving Mariner. There is also a crashed Mariner lying upside-down at the bottom of Lake Washington...

The Nakajima B5N, Allied reporting name "Kate" and also known as the Type 97, was the standard carrier-based torpedo bomber of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) for much of World War II.
Although the Kate was substantially faster and more capable than its Allied counterparts, the American Douglas TBD Devastator monoplane (the U.S. Navy's first all-metal, carrier-borne monoplane of any type with retracting gear), and the British Fairey Swordfish and Fairey Albacore torpedo biplanes (posters of which are also available in our storefront), it was nearing obsolescence by 1941. Nevertheless, the B5N Kate operated throughout the whole war, due to the delayed development of its successor, the B6N.
In the early part of the Pacific War, flown by well-trained IJN aircrews and as part of well-coordinated attacks, the Kate achieved particular successes at the battles of Pearl Harbor, Coral Sea, Midway, and Santa Cruz Islands.

This plane was the most famous Japanese bomber of the war and the one produced in the largest quantity. The aircraft saw service from the first day of the war to the last, and was well known by the Allied codename "Betty". The Betty was designed at the request of the Japanese Navy, which wanted a land-based bomber with high speed and a long range. Mass production of the bomber began in 1940, and the first planes came off the assembly line in April 1941, becoming known for their outstanding range.
The aircraft made its operational debut in the last phases of the war against China. When Japan and the United States went to war, the Betty had considerable operational experience behind it. Its experience and its long range were responsible for the plane's great success, particularly during the first year of war in the Pacific. The Mitsubishi bomber played a major role in the sinking of the British battleships Prince of Wales and Repulse on December 10, 1941. Soon, however, the Allied air forces learned to exploit its weaknesses (such as insufficient armour and unprotected fuel tanks...

Great-granddaughter of the world famous Henri Matisse, Sophie Matisse is a French-American artist from Cambridge, Massachusetts. After a brief stint at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, Sophie decided to follow in her great grandfather's foot steps by attending the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Here she faced pressure to uphold her family's artistic reputation as well as the added difficulty of being taught in French. Eventually, Matisse was asked to leave but she did not let that stop her from reaching the heights of her artistic career.
