Takashi Murakami (American/Japanese, b.1962) is a painter and sculptor famous for his integration of Fine Art, commercialism, Japanese aesthetics, and cultural criticism into his work. Murakami received his BFA, MFA, and PhD from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he studied Nihonga (traditional Japanese painting). He first gained recognition as a sculptor during the early 1990s, exploring otaku (the Japanese term for an obsession with anime and cartoons) and the contradictions between contemporary Japanese society and American culture in his work. In 1996, he created the Hiropon Factory in Japan, which later developed into Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., a large art-making and artist management corporation. Murakami is also a curator and a critical observer of Japanese art. In 2000, he founded the "superflat" movement, a post-modern style drawing inspiration from Japanese manga (comics created in Japan), graphic design, and traditional Japanese prints and screen paintings. Throughout his career, Murakami has increasingly blurred the boundaries between fine art and popular culture by branding his artwork and turning it into merchandise, particularly with the celebrated character Mr. Dob. His embrace of the commercial side of art reached a high point in 2003, when the artist began collaborating with Marc Jacobs in the redesign of the Louis Vuitton logo and handbags. Murakami currently lives and works in Tokyo and New York. Related Categories Pop Art, Tokyo Artists, Japan, Contemporary Asian Art, Murakami Flowers. Murakami DOB. Murakami drawing. Yoshitomo Nara. • Mikhail Baryshnikov Autographed Mid-20th Century Numbered Serigraph by Ivan Luz
    Located in Glenford, NY
Classic 20th Century work by Graphic artist Ivan Luz of Mikhail Baryshnikov at the height of his performance career in the late 1970’s. The piece is number 25 in a limited series of 100 and is personally and boldly signed by Mikhail Baryshnikov. An excellent example of the popular contemporary graphic and poster style of the 1970s. Measures 21.375 inches wide x 26 inches tall x .75 inches deep. It is framed in its original blue metal frame and is ready for hanging. The work is in excellent condition with no color fading. The frame has a few minor scratches that do not detract from the quality of the work or presentation. This is a very fine limited edition serigraph. A serigraph is a type of printmaking process that involves pushing ink through a mesh stencil onto paper or another surface. Each color in the image requires a separate stencil, resulting in a unique, layered print. Serigraphs are often used in fine art and textile design. Mikhail Baryshnikov is a ballet, TV and movie super-star who defected from Russia in 1974 to join American Ballet Theater...
