About the Item

"Compression de canettes", is an iconic piece by César Baldaccini (1921–1998), a leading figure of the Nouveau Réalisme movement. Known simply as César, he revolutionized sculpture by transforming industrial materials into compelling artworks. Part of his renowned "Compression" series, this piece features aluminum cans compacted into a dense, textured block. By applying industrial processes to everyday objects, César challenged traditional notions of art, elevating discarded materials to the status of fine art. The colorful, crumpled surfaces capture the chaotic energy of consumption and destruction, embodying the paradox of beauty within waste. Created during the early 1960s, César’s first compressions were both a commentary on mass production and a celebration of materiality. His method, involving mechanical presses, allowed him to resulting in vibrant compositions that resonate with contemporary concerns on how to go beyond traditional representation in art, but to make a comment about consumerism and the environment. This particular work exemplifies César’s innovative approach, where the compressed metal creates a captivating visual experience. Both a sculptural object and a conceptual statement, "Compression de canettes" continues to attract collectors and enthusiasts worldwide for its bold aesthetics and historical significance.
