Claes Oldenburg
Geometric Mouse Scale E 'Desktop'

2013

About the Item

TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Claes Oldenburg Geometric Mouse Scale E 'Desktop' 2013 Painted aluminum sculpture on painted aluminum base 6 1/2 x 8 1/4 x 6 1/2 in. Edition of 50 Signed and numbered in ink on base Accompanied with COA by Gregg Shienbaum Fine Art Condition: This work is in pristine condition. This work comes in its original packaging, custom fit for this sculpture. ABOUT THIS WORK: The source of inspiration for making this Geometric Mouse is an old movie camera. The mouse form is combined with that of an old movie camera, whose square box and two circular film spools mimic his face and ears, while the grip is the nose of the mouse. As in Oldenburg’s other artworks, this image blends high and low art, but is more personal. The artist has even suggested that the Geometric Mouse is his alter ego, stating that he first took the subject of the mouse from one of the most iconic and popular characters ever: Mickey Mouse. The mouse is an extremely recurring subject in Oldenburg's body of work. It is considered his artistic symbol par excellence, for his typical humor and use of obsolete objects and iconic characters as main source. The concept/name of the mouse 'desktop' also plays on the concept of fast paced movement toward technology in today's world, but is a nod to the past of how fast the world is actually moving. The Desktop mouse can also be seen by today's generation as a play on a computer mouse on the old style green mouse pad. A mouse on a mouse pad. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Claes Oldenburg is a Swedish American sculptor, best known for his public art installations typically featuring very large replicas of everyday objects. Another theme in his work is soft sculpture versions of everyday objects.  Many of Oldenburg's large-scale sculptures of mundane objects elicited public ridicule before being embraced as whimsical, insightful, and fun additions to public outdoor art. In the 1960's he became associated with the Pop Art movement. This brash, often humorous, approach to art was at great odds with the prevailing sensibility that, by its nature, art dealt with "profound" expressions or ideas. But Oldenburg's spirited art found first a niche then a great popularity that endures to this day. Oldenburg was honored with a solo exhibition of his work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1969, and with a retrospective organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 1995. In 2002 the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York held a retrospective of the drawings of Oldenburg and Van Bruggen; the same year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York exhibited a selection of their sculptures on the roof of the museum.

'Big Sausage Pizza' UAP Polich Tallix Foundry Chromium Steel Sculpture by XVALA
By XVALA
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
Made from a real pizza nestled in its original box opened using high-chromium stainless steel, the piece measures 16" x 16" x 21", weighs approximately 80 pounds and is an Artist Proof. The artist sees his creation as a reflection of the cultural distortions represented by memes, a statement he has expressed perfectly in his reflective, yet unevenly textured, medium. "You look at your reflection [in the piece], and it's distorted in the stainless steel." The piece was born in 2007, just as the social internet was beginning to explode out of the digital back rooms and onto the world stage under the watchful eyes of Myspace, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr, and other popular platforms. But Big Sausage Pizza was conceived well before that, in the Wild West days of the internet when few truly public forums existed and media of every kind was most commonly shared via email. In those days one never knew what to expect from a link or an attachment and each click had equal odds of either brightening your day with a dancing baby or posing a risk to your computer, your dignity, or your relationships... and that was half the fun. Every recipient of these images, videos, or audio files suddenly had the means not only to pass them along to as many people as they pleased, but to change and individualize them before sending them on. In this way, the media very quickly mutated and were distributed around the globe. In other words, they became true memes. Pizza has evolved in much the same way. Like the internet, it started as an artifact of a specific culture, but today both are so common throughout the world that most of us can barely remember a time when they were special and exotic. Just as the internet simply IS, pizza also simply IS. We used to make pizza at home, or at least buy it in a place where they were handmade and offered a limited list of toppings. Today, the meme that is pizza is brought to our tables by an almost entirely mechanized process, and it's so wildly mutated that each individual has the ability to create a new twist on the old...
