About the Item

DIEGO GIACOMETTI Table berceau, première version, circa 1962 Patinated bronze 37.7 x 137 x 43 cm 14 7/8 x 54 x 16 7/8 in Signed twice on the structure : Diego Certificate of authenticity issued by Denis Vincenot Defying the limits of sculpture, Diego Giacometti molds bronze to create unique and functional furniture. His skillfulness attracted the interest of many collectors, especially the support of Pierre Matisse, where the artist's furniture and objects adorned the walls of his homes. With creations that are both artistic and utilitarian, he also managed to captivate the renowned fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, the gallery owner Aimé Maeght, and an American clientele, all of whom had to be patient as Diego worked almost exclusively on commission and produced sparingly. Despite taking his time and meticulously crafting his work, his technical mastery earned him the nickname "the patina ace."

Diego's journey began alongside his brother, Alberto Giacometti, for whom he created plaster molds and metal frameworks for his works. In the 1930s, the duo designed lamps and vases for the renowned decorator Jean-Michel Frank. This collaboration is said to have sparked Diego Giacometti's idea and desire to create his first pieces of furniture.

The "Table berceau" perfectly illustrates this genius and the timeless aspect of the artist's works. The finesse and delicacy of the lines brighten up various interiors.

Decades after his death, Diego Giacometti is still considered a major name in decorative arts, with his works fetching high prices. For example, in 2023, the "console 'Hommage à Böcklin'" (c.1978) from the Josefowitz collection sold for a price approaching 6 million euros.
