About the Item

Mirrors, 2016 Neon, flasher, plexi mirror, wires Size Variable Mirrors is a 8-foot long chandelier made of dozens of colorful neons hanging on top of a large mirror rectangular box. The neons read common acronyms used in digital communication along with the full sentences they refer to. While the acronyms glow a bright light, the long sentences appear weakened, endlessly vacillating between bright and dull, fighting to remain on. The piece is a natural progression from Kosmatopoulos’ past works exploring language as affected by and digital communication thru our phones. Reflecting upon the visual universe of artist Jason Rhoades (1965-2006), Mirrors explores, in a whimsical way, how language is formed, transformed and simplified by technology in human communication. Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos is a multi-disciplinary conceptual artist. She has lived her life surrounded by unique cultures—born in Greece, raised in Paris—she now lives and works in NY. Her work investigates the definition and construction of identities, personal memories and collective histories in the digital age. Influenced by the increasing interplay between physical and virtual spaces, Kosmatopoulos decontextualize everyday-life objects, cultural symbols and behaviors and translates them into the Internet and social media world. Her work has exhibited in the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America. Kosmatopoulos also worked alongside socially charged entities such as the Organization of American States (OAS) to create large-scale installations that raise awareness on social issues.
