About the Item
"Blue Morpho" is a contemporary and parametric wall sculpture with gorgeous blue tones. Made from oil lacquer paint and carved Baltic birch wood, this body of work is abstract & sculptural. Each piece is handmade, and adds a clean and modern feel to any space.
Art meets architecture in Urrutia’s "Flexible Ridgids" series. Creating a harmonious dialogue between form, space, and design, his creations are distinguished by their unique spatiality, integrating advanced design technologies such as CNC machining, fabrication, and forming. "Rose Gold Shimmers" is part of his newest series incorporating acrylic mirror with wooden sculptural forms. Flexible Ridgids explore sculptural forms that mimic the fluid, harmonic movements of a flexible surface, challenging the rigidity of traditional materials and pushing the boundaries of form and texture.
"Blue Morpho" wall sculpture is currently on exhibition at Gracie Mansion Conservancy in New York City for an exhibition titled “Urban Echoes and Reflections in New York City” featuring works from Hugo Garcia Urrutia and MK Semos. The artwork will be on exhibition from November 4, 2024 - January 31, 2025.

Hugo G. Urrutia is a multidisciplinary artist-designer, interested in the cross-pollination between art and architecture. His artwork challenges the notion of what constitutes a piece of art. A graduate and active member of the Architectural Association in the United Kingdom, Urrutia’s work creates a distinct spatiality located at the interstice of art and architecture. His work explores and uses technology for design and fabrication, with a sensitive and conscious reminder of the creativity of human endeavor.
Urrutia graduated from the Architectural Association in 2013, earning a Master of Architecture in the Design & Make programme. In 2000, he graduated from Texas Tech University, with a Bachelor of Architecture and Design and received the 2000 Outstanding Thesis Award. In 2004, he founded Decorazon Gallery in Dallas’ Bishop Arts District where he curated and exhibited numerous art exhibitions for national and international artists. His personal artwork has been exhibited worldwide.
Urrutia is interested in conveying a strong concept and exploring different mediums by presenting his message in a very indirect format, while creating visual simulation for the viewer. His latest series titled Flexible Rigids, explores sculptural forms that simulate smooth harmonic movements of a flexible surface, initiating the process from a “rigid “surface.
"Using nature and geometry as a starting point, I am interested in the notion of a wave, a synchronized flock of birds, a silk fabric soothingly moving with the wind. Then I challenge myself to try to mimic these noble forms…This series derives from repetitiveness of a simple component like the triangle. As a whole, it produces a sort of wavy effect in which I can play with the shades and shadows. By cutting a simple rigid coloured plane in a precise way, my “canvas” becomes sculptural and organic...”

Urrutia’s personal artwork has been exhibited in the United States, United Kingdom, Thailand, Colombia and Hong Kong. His participation in art and architectural competitions and public projects includes the AIA Cincinnati, where he received the Design Award for the 2000 National Urban Poetry I competition and the 2005 Arquine International Architecture Competition in Mexico City. His art installations The Mexican Tsunami and Making a Killing were both featured at the Art Santa Fe 2010 Contemporary Art Fair, curated by Charlotte Jackson, and University of Dallas and the McKinney Avenue Contemporary (MAC) in Dallas curated by Charissa N. Terranova. Together with the AA-DLAB 2012 team, Urrutia presented the Fallen Star at the Architectural Association Back Members' Room.
