About the Item

Israel Hadany (Israeli, 1941-). A stainless steel maquette for sculpture "Three Tubes", currently installed at the University of Pennsylvania in the Morris Arboretum. Sculpture is mounted on a square iron base. Unmarked. 24 in x 12 in x 12 in. The one at the Arboretum is described as Material: stainless steel over structural steel, 1979 Gift of Philip and Muriel Berman Three Tubes presents a visual puzzle. Three disconnected cylinders are aligned in a column as if by magic. But if your eyes trace the path of the shapes from bottom to top, you'll discover that it really doesn't defy gravity. Israel Hadany (Hebrew: ישראל הדני‎, Israel ha-Dani) (born 1941) is an Israeli environment artist , sculptor and jewelry designer, internationally acknowledged. He is involved with poetry writing as well. Born in Beit HaShita kibutz. Along his childhood his family moved several times, first to Ayelet Hashahar kibbutz, later to Kfar Ganim (nearby Petah Tikva) and finally to Jerusalem. At the age of 15 he started his art studies at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv, taking evening courses while continuing his high school learning during day time. He was the youngest student in the institute among other mature students. He focused on drawing and painting studies and was deeply involved in his art. Later he returned there but soon realized that painting is not going to be enough for his artistic and personal aspirations. 1965 - 1967 He turned to post graduate studies at Hornsey College of Art, London. The years in London influenced deeply his art. His confrontation with monumental ancient civilization's art in the British Museum was highly influential and left a significant imprint on his art. He mentions often a monumental sculpture from the Easter Islands . In Hornsey College he focused mainly on sculpture. Several years after his return to Israel (1971) he was invited to teach sculpture and design at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. 1972 Hadany Represented Israel at the Venice Biennale, Italy. Hadany often collaborates in his art with architects and thinkers and creates environmental works of art. 1975 He works with Taller de Arquitectura of Ricardo Bofill. Barcelona . 1981-1982 creates the first artonomic system in sculpture. 1983 Represents Israel at the International Symposium on Outdoor Sculpture at Yorkshire. 2000 Among the five finalists in the international competition of Martin Luther King National Memorial Project Washington. 2001 Guest artist at the International Sculpture Symposium, Carrara. Selected Public Works 1975 Glass Sculpture, Beit Yad Lebanim, Jerusalem. 1977 Memorial Sculpture , Ben Gurion Airport . 1985 Sky Pool , The Open Museum ,Tefen , Israel. 1987 Sky Pool , The Israel Museum Sculpture Garden. 1998 The Shrine of Trees , the National Library , Hebrew University , Jerusalem. 2001 Here lays the dove's shadow. Carrara. 2016 The Blue System. Har Hotzvim Jerusalem Like Yaacov Agam, Menashe Kadishman, Dani Karavan, Yechiel Shemi and Igael Tumarkin his large scale environmental works can be found all around Israel and around the world. Hadany's art is concerned with the sublime and the transcendental often allusive of ancient monumental Egyptian and Assyrian art. Most of his earlier three dimensional works were abstract geometric and minimalist. but after his visit to India in 2005 his art has undergone a deep change and was opened to new directions. Oasis, his artistic environment in Beersheba for instance is colorful and rich in shapes. Aharon Bezalel Israeli Modernist Sculpture 2 Parts Minimalist Aluminum or Steel
By Aharon Bezalel
Located in Surfside, FL
A suite of 2 sculptures. Lovers, man and woman nestled together. sleek minimalist mod sculpture. polished finish on one side. not sure if theese are stell or aluminium. they are cast and signed in Hebrew with initials and numbered 9/9. It is 2 parts that nest together. Aharon Bezalel (born Afghanistan 1926) Born in Afghanistan in 1926 and immigrated to Israel at an early age. As a youth was engaged as a silversmith and craftsman, and was a student of the sculptor Zev Ben-Zvi from whom he absorbed the basic concepts of classic and modernist art and interpreted, according to them, ideas based on ancient Hebrew sources. Aharon Bezalel works and resides in Jerusalem, he taught art for many years. “I saw myself as part of this region. I wanted to find the contact between my art and my surroundings. Those were the first years of Jean Piro’s excavations at the Beer-Sheba mound. They found there, for example, the Canaanite figurines that I especially liked and that were an element that connected me with the past and with this place.” “…a seed and sperm or male and female. These continue life. The singular, the individual alone, cannot exist; I learned this from my father who dabbled with the Kabbalah.” (Aharon Bezalel, excerpt from an interview with David Gerstein) “The singular in Aharon Bezalel’s work is always potentially a couple if not a threesome, the one is also the many: when the individual is revealed within the group he will always seek a huddling, a clinging together. The principle of modular construction is required by this perception of unity and multiplicity, as modular construction in his work is an act of conception or defense. Two poles of unity, potentially alone, exist in Aaron Bezalel’s world: From a formal, sculptural sense these are the sphere and pillar, metaphorically these are the female in the final stages of pregnancy and the solitary male individual. Sphere-seed-woman; Pillar-strand-man. The disproportional, small heads in Aharon Bezalel’s figures leave humankind in it’s primal physical capacity. The woman as a pregnancy or hips, the man as an aggressive or defensive force, the elongated chest serves as a phallus and weapon simultaneously. This was achieved either through careful balance and construction, as in Suspense (1966), or by using glass and metal so that the metal appeared unsupported, as in Segments (1968). In 1995, he began painting portraits of sheep. These instantly-recognizable sheep portraits...
