Kosso Eloul
Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) was a major Israeli/Canadian post-war sculptor and an important contributor to public art around the world and especially in Toronto. Eloul started his artistic career in Israel but was educated in the United States. He first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (under Frank Lloyd Wright) and later at the Chicago School of Design (with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy). He would represent Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1959. Around 1962, Eloul met the Canadian artist Rita Letendre and within two years he left Israel, following her to first Montreal and eventually to Toronto. As a couple, their careers and aesthetics seem to develop in tandem. They seem to influence each other and both of their artistic practices reach maturity, ushering in critical and commercial success. Numerous major institutions hold examples of his work in their permanent collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, The Israel Museum and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to mention a few.
