Warm Leaf
By Alex Yanes
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This is an original sculpture collaboration by artists Dennis McNett (also known as Wolfbat) and Alex Yanes from their "Good Medicine" exhibition at Paradigm Gallery + Studio in Philadelphia, PA, USA. This sculpture series marks the first time the two artists have ever worked collaboratively. PRESS RELEASE // Paradigm Gallery is pleased to present "Good Medicine", an exhibition featuring sculptural works in wood by Dennis McNett and Alex Yanes. New individual works by the artists will be displayed alongside pieces that have been created collaboratively between their studios. The show considers the concept of positive energy and how moods, situations, or experiences can be shaped by the presence of a strong force for good, while focusing broadly on the many ways that spirituality is practiced and explored in contemporary culture. Symbols, totems, and signs in a range of sizes are hand-carved and crafted from wood, resin, and acrylic to manifest the uplifting theme behind the works in three dimensions. "Good Medicine" will be on view through July 21, 2018. Both artists have practices that revolve around ideas of tradition, personal and communal narratives, nostalgia, and heritage. They express these themes in a blended style of neo-pop and folk art, drawing on their proximity to the subculture of skateboarding. With bold graphic elements and intricate detailing, the wooden sculptures, carvings, and installations portray a deeply personal and self-reflexive approach to art-making and craft, inviting the viewer to contemplate one’s quest for self-actualization through the assemblages. Dennis McNett is known for his large-scale woodcut sculptures that fuse relief printmaking with traditional wood carving. Steeped in domestic and international mythologies, McNett often receives the seeds of concepts for pieces through meditation and his spiritual practice that he then renders in his wood carvings, wood-cut panels, and prints. Over 15 works will be on display in "Good Medicine"– including "Big Mary’s Resurrection", an example of McNett’s dedication to clearing areas of bad energy left behind by past events. Also on view will be a new Owl Spirit sculpture series and collaged panels. His birds of prey and Norse images exist in high-contrast, with alternating deep and shallow black marks that delineate swaths of colored or natural wood surfaces. Alex Yanes constructs his surreal layered, textural sculptures from wood, epoxy resin, acrylic and spray enamel. The combination of materials gives his work a subtle gloss, with clean colors and polish. All Yanes’s 7 works in "Good Medicine", including a large wall installation, are brand new and showcase his signature pop graphics. The postmodern mashups reference funhouse aesthetics, with a nod to comics, cartoons, and vintage typography...

MIRROR - Contemporary - Geometric Abstract w/ Repurposed Construction Material
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
"Mirror" is a site specific installation that was exhibited in the show "Dialects of Place(s) by Land Report Collective at COOP Gallery in Nashville, TN. In this piece, Jobe uses industrial materials such as insulation foam, concrete, window screen, and graphite tracing paper to create a patterned structure that protrudes from the corner and carries the viewer's eye upward. At the bottom of the piece, we see delicately balanced concrete on top of pale blue insulation foam. The patterned concrete and insulation foam carries the viewer's eye upwards towards another pop of blue on top of the aluminum window screen frame. The screen gives the viewer a window in which to look through the piece. On one side, this mesh frames the graphite paper and on the other side the viewer can see the patterned concrete and insulation foam. Review from "The Rib" about "Mirror" One of the more surprising works here is Nashville-based Brian Jobe...

Nancy Baker, Fewer Answers, 2017, paper, acrylic, digital pigment print
Located in Darien, CT
In Baker’s work, there is solace in the geometry of fundamentals, and a practice that focuses on the ephemeral nature of paper and the ease of its transportability, which allows her to create large-scale constructions. A desire for definitive certainties and incontrovertible truths in an era of “alternative facts”, precipitate the need for Baker to assert her clarification of evidence. A new major installation has been created for her exhibition at ODETTA that layers baroque design elements found in paper cup carrying trays with anxiety-provoking phrases, rendered as gorgeous, yet fragile paper spheres...

Norma Márquez Orozco, The Sun, 2016, Translucent Paper, 30 x 30, Minimalist
Located in Darien, CT
Norma Marquez Orozco explores concepts of impermanence, perception, form and balance through physical movement of the work itself in a lucid, game-like context, like puzzles. All the elements are made of paper, molded into three-dimensional forms. The repetitive geometric shapes are assembled inside boxes built out of translucent paper. The arrangement is random and unfixed to allow movement and unpredictable composition. The harmonies and tensions in the work arise from different exchanges between the colors, the patterns, and the geometric and organic shapes, as well as the sense that change is constantly occurring as the elements shift and move. When one looks at these compositions, you see them for the first time, every time, because what is creating and completing the artwork is always changing; such as light, weather and forms merge and interact. As a result of these dynamic relationships, the work extends beyond her personal hand, sustaining an appearance and composition entirely of its own. Norma Márquez Orozco was

Resin Abstract Circle Sculpture: 'Circle'
Located in New York, NY
The artistic collaboration of Kelly Bugden + Van Wifvat has produced a thought-provoking body of sculptures, paintings, and constructions. Nature, childhood memories, and everyday archetypes take shape in unexpected combinations of materials. The works emerged as the tactile and visual senses channeled the ritualistic power and materiality of selected artifacts. The resulting objects exist in a space between what they were originally and what they could become. A wheel, for example, is distorted as if seen through a prism. Their collaboration grew out of years of shaping materials into one-of-a-kind objects. Intuitively, the process of creating with their hands took an inward turn. Prism is a travelogue through memories and dreams, yielding abstract forms that capture moments of transformation. Van Wifvat grew up with eight siblings and studied sculpture and environmental design in Minneapolis at MCAD. In 1979, he opened a storefront art gallery to promote the work of local artists. The space featured printed materials—art books, periodicals, fanzines, and postcard’s. Wifvat moved to New York in 1983 to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons. In 1987, he co-founded Van Gregory & Norton design studio, specializing in convex mirrors and curtain hardware...

charcoal on paper mounted to silk foam core and wood Mark Pomilio’s work focuses on the research of fractals, cloning, and single cell manipulation. His mathematics-based drawings serve as a metaphor for naturally occurring systems of reproduction and growth. When Pomilio begins a piece, he doesn’t know where it will lead; although his tools and marks are precise, the layering, repetition, rotation, and distribution of basic shapes are improvised to emulate a single cell dividing and compounding into a complex form. The process of cell growth influences Pomilio’s practice and is emphasized through his own process, the use of erasure, faint outlines, opacity and translucency, and deliberate marks. The resulting compositions are balanced, unified, and harmonious. His work is included in the collections of the University of Arizona Museum of Art, Baylor University Martin Museum of Art, Dupont Corporation, University of Michigan...
