About the Item
Abstract Hanging Sculpture - Triangle by Mickey "Kano" Kane (American, 1939-2002).
This simple yet striking piece can be viewed from both sides. It is composed of two separate triangles which align along the middle. On both sides of the piece the edge is rounded and the wood is finished in a warm brown mottling. On one side there are carved inlays filled with a warm purple detailing. On the other side, the inlay consists of light brown paper pulp, which is accentuated by bronze toned finishing on the wood around it. There are several different finishes and textures throughout the piece, providing continued visual interest.
Overall size: 49"H x 50"W
Piece is in two parts, each are 49" in height and 25" across.
Both triangles have holes along the top for hanging.
Mickey “Kano” Kane (American, 1939-2002) was born in Illinois and grew up in Sacramento, CA. Kane moved to the Pacific Coast and worked on mixed media panels - which he would refer to as a “Totem” – and detailed collage compositions. His collage work is generally satirical or critical in nature, frequently dealing with themes of money, capitalism, government, power, and debt. By contrast, his “Totem” sculptural work is abstract and free of direct symbolism, focusing instead on the aesthetics of the composition.

Artist’s Statement:
The Totem is indicative of the unfolding 21st Century, graphically and metaphorically. It is neither one side nor the other, nor does one side challenge or compete with the other. Each side cooperates and thus enhances the other so that both "sides" transcend that definition into a composition revealing that, indeed, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The Totem reflects the inner harmony that all sides, whether two or two thousand, are striving to manifest in their own inimitable way.

He studied at the Otis and Chouinard Art Institutes and worked on several murals throughout Los Angeles in the Works Progress Administration. He served in the United States Army, from 1943 to 1946, in Korea and Okinawa a s a heavy anti-aircraft artillery mechanic and instructor, warehouseman, and artist, publicist, and graphic designer for special events at Headquarters Company, Asiatic Command.
