About the Item
Charred olive head sculpture combines direct carving and traditional Japanese Yakisugi burning to evoke visceral themes of decay, renewal, and resilience. Tizón (18 × 22 × 20 cm) by Aldonza is carved from a single reclaimed olive block, its human visage revealed through careful gouging of wood grain. The surface is then superficially burned using the Yakisugi technique, creating a deep, charcoal-hued patina that both protects and intensifies the natural texture.
Aldonza’s process-driven “Tizóns” series underscores the poetic tension between destruction and preservation: the scorching fire that appears to damage the wood actually seals and strengthens it, much like life’s trials forge character. Subtle cracks and variations in the charred finish highlight the sculpture’s organic birthmarks, while the block’s remaining natural knots and growth rings anchor the work to its material origins.
Presented in museum-quality condition, this one-of-a-kind bust arrives ready for display on a plinth or tabletop. It ships in a custom wooden crate (18 × 22 × 20 cm; packed weight 3 kg) with handling instructions. Collectors may acquire Tizón individually or as part of the complete series for a cohesive installation exploring transformation, impermanence, and hope.

Óscar Aldonza Torres (b. 1976, Santiago de Compostela) is a sculptor and Sculpture Professor at EASD Mestre Mateo. He holds a Diploma in Volume Techniques from EASD Mestre Mateo, a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Seville, and an MA in Art Heritage Management from the University of Santiago de Compostela. Winner of the 1st Prize at the XIV Open-Air Sculpture Symposium in O Grove and 1st Accésit of the Francisco Asorey International Sculpture Prize (Cambados), his work has been presented in venues such as the Salon d’Automne in Paris, O Rectángulo de Ouro in Portugal, “Respostas sen preguntas” at Galería Sabor a Menta (Santiago de Compostela), and “Animalium” at the MIHL Museum (Lugo), among others. In his sculptural practice, Óscar Aldonza Torres positions the human figure as an intimate mirror, reflecting universal fears and inner doubts. His creative process—both impulsive and experimental—is underpinned by rigorous material research, allowing forms to emerge organically as each work evolves. Predominantly working in series, Aldonza Torres embraces ambivalence and conceptual openness, crafting open-ended narratives that invite viewers to engage emotionally—ranging from identification to repulsion and intrigue—and to complete the dialogue with their own perceptions.
