About the Item

Fissure is a unique fired clay constructed and painted sculpture by contemporary artist Patricia Volk, dimensions are 55 × 45 × 9 cm (21.7 × 17.7 × 3.5 in). The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Patricia Volk’s abstract sculptures emerge from the unique fusion of two key elements: form and colour. The artist begins her process by cutting pieces of clay, her preferred material, in search of the perfect line—one that is simple yet dynamic. The clay is then fired and assembled to shape the final sculpture. As she explains: "There is no pre-thought at all, it either works or it does not. There is such simplicity in a good line that it is completely underestimated, because it is so incredibly difficult […] but so aesthetically pleasing." Influenced by the American tradition of painted fired clay, Patricia paints her sculptures with acrylics, selecting the colours intuitively and subjectively, yet always with careful consideration. The vivid, intense colours highlight the shapes of the sculptures, accentuating the balances and contrasts between strength and fragility, stability and precariousness, weight and lightness. These colours invite different interpretations from the viewer, evoking feelings of calm, conflict, or a sense of movement. Patricia Volk is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors (FRSS), a prestigious British organization promoting excellence in sculpture, and an Academician of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA). Her work was recently featured in the book 50 Women Sculptors, alongside the work of renowned artists like Camille Claudel, Barbara Hepworth, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Louise Bourgeois.
