Abstract Expressionist style three dimensional wood wall sculpture with gesturally applied layers of encaustic in hues of robin's egg blue, light yellow, orange, and fuchsia on a white background "Sashay," made by Susan Stover in 2020 encaustic on wood 8 x 6 x 1.5 inches Lightweight, excellent condition and ready to hang Signed by the artist, verso This small three dimensional abstract wall sculpture was made by San Francisco based artist, Susan Stover, in 2020. The mixed media, folk style sculpture is composed of carved wood coated with colorful layers of encaustic. The layers of encaustic drip down the edges of the raw wood panel, revealing interesting plays of color at every angle. The signature is located on the back along with wire for easy hanging. About the series: This body of work draws specifically on memories of sewing with my grandmother and of my experiences in India embroidering with women in remote villages. I am interested in how textiles function within a culture, in how they are used from birth to death, in rituals, ceremonies and everyday life. Resources may be limited so fabric is often recycled to patch worn clothing or to make quilts. Other items are created for special occasions such as weddings or other religious events. These textile activities, often a communal one, are handed down from generation to generation and the textiles that are produced become containers and objects of memory, tradition and experience. Artist statement: As I build one body of work on the previous ones, there are certain elements that remain constant forming a link or thread that continues to develop, progress and evolve. Formal issues of line, surface and color intermingle with conceptual ideas of sacred space, solitude, spirituality, the passage of time and of leaving one’s mark. Each piece and series is a personal meditation on what connects the past and the present and the beauty of imperfection. The connection between art and spirituality has always been at the source of my own art making whether as a participant or as an observer. I am interested in how other cultures integrate their beliefs and their art in the objects created and the rituals performed. My intention is to create artwork that evokes this sense of transcendent mystery and purpose and to imbue my work with a vulnerability and vitality that reflect a human condition, emotion or state of mind.
