Elizabeth Alexander
A Mightier Work is Ahead: A Distant Thunder

2022

About the Item

Elizabeth Alexander's series A Mightier Work is Ahead transforms a series of commemorative Confederate plates that are collected and displayed in many homes. Alexander interrogates these objects, editing out the figures of Confederate generals such as Robert E. Lee, and contains their fragments within a vial beneath the plate. This serves as a reminder to us that history is not to be erased, but to be better understood. Drawing from her own story, with a loving yet tumultuous working-class upbringing at its heart, Elizabeth Alexander works to unpack the social, cultural, and psychological pressures within American domesticity. Raised to see the possibility in found or unwanted things, she rethinks the domestic environment as an extension of human ingenuity. Elizabeth Alexander's work can be found in the collection of the Crystal Bridges Museum and the Mint Museum and she has exhibited work at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Loveland Museum, and the Norman Rockwell Museum. She has also been written about in HyperAllergic.
