About the Item

Ann Rothman Purple Ballarina (Circus, Whimsical, Viola Frey, Delicate, Playful, Fun, Cirque du Soleil, The Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey) 2022 Porcelain, Low Fire Glazes, Crayons, Watercolors Fired Cone 06, 04 6 x 3.5 x 3 inches COA provided Ref.: 924802-873 Tags: Circus, Whimsical, Viola Frey, Delicate, Playful, Fun, Cirque du Soleil, The Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey Ann Rothman became interested in ceramics at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, where she originally enrolled to learn Spanish. Learning Spanish did not work out but dropping Spanish classes meant no access to a school meal ticket. Courses taught in three languages which included English were few. Ceramics was a candidate. Ann doesn’t know if she could make a pot after taking those classes but she began to love working in clay. Ann Rothman has a BA in art history from Columbia, N.Y.C. “My ceramic education has been from Greenwich House Pottery, N.Y.C and a number of workshops I attended. I attended Penland, North Carolina, Watershed, Maine, and workshops in Evia, Greece and East Anglia, U.K. I can’t pinpoint what exactly I learned in these workshops, but I soaked up the environment and that was influential in learning about clay.” For a number of years Rothman wrote reviews for Harry Dennis’ magazine, American Ceramics which unfortunately shuttered after Harry’s untimely death - and articles for Ceramics: Art & Perception and Ceramics Monthly. She has presented panel discussions in the past at NCECA and was involved in a few talks and panels in different venues. Ann Rothman loves touching clay and whether the object that she intends to create is a thing, a person or an animal she is most interested in it projecting personality and movement. “Clay doesn’t talk but I want the clay to communicate and interact with the viewer. I use porcelain because I love the feel of it (and I think porcelain should be more democratic than its reputation leads one to believe) and then fire low to accommodate bright colors which can transport this pure clay body into folk art imagery. I always want anything I attempt to make to reveal its humble clay roots and leave no doubt that it was made by hand.”

Sculpture limited Edition "The Cannon Dancer" Robert Combas French Sculptor
By Robert Combas
Located in Paris, FR
The art market confirms that Robert Combas is the most successful living French artist with Pierre Soulages. During the last two years, the value of his works has multiplied by 5 , proof with the last Artcurial auction sale from December 4th 2019. This sculpture "The Cannon Dancer" is one of the most interesting of his major works from the 90s where he touched on themes dear to him like: battles, war, religion, love, sex, women, mythology, music, genre scenes... - "Le danseur au canon", The Cannon Dancer Painted polychrome resin sculpture. This is a limited édition signed Combas, dated 95 and numbered 4/8 on the base. - Is it a carnival ? a character, a buffoon representing power by a cannon exhibited as a phallic object that symbolizes power. "The moment when the official hierarchies collapse, where the powerful become ridiculous and the fools the only wise respected. The moment of inversions, negations, derision and extravagance. Abel and Cain, Salome and Saint John the Baptist : whatever the time and the weapons, it is almost always the same story", said Combas. Robert Combas love to Deforms when, allowing itself disproportions, exaggerations and deletions, it gives birth to creatures with noses, lips or feet disproportionately inflated or stretched, even monstrous and comic. In this case, Combas flirts with satire, farce, the grotesque. Make love better than a war ! Robert COMBAS has been pursuing a unique approach since the 1980s. His eccentric and powerful representations of the world make this genius one of the emblematic figures of French contemporary art. The artist's work is now the subject of numerous retrospectives and institutional exhibitions. The enthusiasm of collectors becomes more important with each new public sale and its rating climbs which confirms the sustainable nature of the art of Robert COMBAS. He brought at the dawn of the 80s a new figurative painting. Present on the artistic scene since 1979 he is the creator of a movement that the artist Ben called the Free Figuration, movement comprising: Rémi...

Great menina dancer Nili Pincas Contemporary art sculpture terracotta pastel
Located in Paris, FR
Unique terracotta sculpture Signed by the artist The contemplative creatures of Nili Pincas, of an extreme refinement, invite silence. This isolation of the sculpted being seizes and soothes, at the same time as it questions. Are we facing the face of anguish or introspection? The white or purple flesh, with a slightly grainy matte appearance, reveals the infinite sensuality of the artist’s touch...
