About the Item
Antique Bolognese Dog- Dresden Porcelain-
After Meissen master artist Johann Joachim Kändler (1706-1775).
Carl Thieme founded Saxon Porcelain Manufactory in 1872 in the city of Potschappel, Germany. He began with the production of decorative porcelain in the well-loved patterns of Meissen, Sevres, and Vienna. He employed experienced artisans who were especially skilled in the art of porcelain painting.
This very fine and rather large porcelain figurine of a Bolognese dog was manufactured at the beginning of the century from the Carl Thieme Saxony Porcelain Manufactory in Dresden, Germany. This particular form was made famous in the 18th century for Meissen by Johann Joachim Kändler (1706-1775), a late Baroque sculptor who was a major innovator in European porcelain sculpture.
This lovely porcelain piece is made of a high grade of porcelain and polychrome painted white that has been sculptured to give the seated dog the realistic textured-looking fur. The expressive face is certainly life-like with the glinting eyes and realistic look and coloring.
Fine examples of this dog can be found in numerous international museums noted for the exceptional design and craftmanship.

Executed during the nineteenth century, this figure is fully in line with the eclectic taste of the reign of Napoleon III. Indeed, the Empress Eugenie brought the Louis XVI style up to date in her castle of Compiègne. Jacques Caffieri is one of the most famous bronze smiths of the eighteenth century. In 1715 he was admitted as a master caster and chiseler, and worked almost exclusively for the crown castles...
