About the Item
'Meditation' original opal serpentine sculpture signed by Zimbabwean artist Dudzai Mushawepwere. The sculpture uses abstraction in the human figure to capture an abstract state of mind: the sculpture presents the form of a woman, her hips wide and arms long. Her arms reach over and hold her circular head, which floats neckless above the torso like a nearly-setting sun. The figure thusly separates their mind and thoughts from their bodily and earthly concerns and instead connects themselves to the heavens. The image reminds of the dancer drawings of European modernists like Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, but it reminds especially of the ballerinas Salvador Dali created for Walt Disney's 'Fantasia.'

Dudzai was born in 1974 in Mutoko. He is the last born in a family of four. He is the younger brother of sculptor Tendai Mushawapwere. Dudzai grew up in Chitungwiza, a high-density suburb just outside Harare, where he completed his primary education. Dudzai showed early signs of artistic creativity while at school. He started his sculpting career in 1990 when he was taken on by the sculptor John Type as his assistant. He worked with John for two years sculpting contemporary visual art under his supervision and then set up on his own as a full time sculptor.
He is inspired to sculpt by his ancestors who were also artists. Through his research and interests in African culture, he found that his cultural history was becoming defunct in sculpting and he wanted to revive this art form by teaching himself as well as others. The most effective way he found to let the people of his origin know the importance of their culture was through sculpture. There he explores themes ranging from day to day activities to cultural history and visiting places of interest. Today, his sculptures can be found in galleries in Germany, Belgium, Holland, the U.K. and the U.S.

Shona artists and crafts people have been working in different media for generations. These include paintings, pottery, basket ware, wood carvings, and sculpture done in metal as well as the stone carvings. While there is not a long standing tradition of sculpture in what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia), stone carvings dating from the 15th century were seen in Great Zimbabwe, an excavated temple near Bulawayo. Most of the artifacts from this location have been moved to museums in Cape Town, South Africa or London.
It is generally agreed that Zimbabwean stone sculpture as seen today began during the late colonial period of the 1950's and 1960's. During this period the artists and artisans depicted many of the traditional Shona and other tribal spiritual myths.
Out of all the nations in Africa, the large varieties and abundant supplies of rock formations present throughout the Zimbabwe landscape...
