About the Item

"China Maze Doll", woven cotton & rayon, 72 x 51", 2008. California-based American fiber artist, Lia Cook's (b. 1942) work "A-Maze Doll", was awarded a Gold Medal at the 5th International Fiber Art Biennale in Beijing, China in December 2008. The exhibition, From Lausanne to Beijing, was held at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. This piece was also included in the traveling exhibition of Cook's work, Lia Cook: In Touch, Faces and Mazes (2009). Bridging several generations of technological development, Cook’s textile-based works complicate and enrich the relationship between image and process. Cook weaves digital images of cherubic faces or dolls using a Jacquard loom, adding patterns taken from EEG and MRI brain scans over her subjects. The neurological scans themselves evoke textile patterns, drawing a thread between advanced medical procedures and handmade craft. For Cook, the neurological imagery underlines the different sensations viewers experience when looking at an image on a textile, rather than on paper or screen. “When people see that my pictorial pieces are actually woven, it adds an important element to their experience of the work. Specifically it creates more intense relationships to the pieces,” Cook has said. "My current practice incorporates concepts of cloth, touch, and memory. I use the detail, an intimate moment in time, often woven in oversize scale to intensify a shared emotional and sensual experience. I use a digital loom to weave images that are embedded in the structure of cloth. The digital pixel becomes a thread that when interlaced with another becomes both cloth and image at the same time. This woven image brings with it many of the sensual experiences that we associate with cloth. Childhood family snapshot and video stills are some of the raw materials that I draw on to investigate small, intimate details of the body or to capture a fleeting human expression My practice involves research into new technologies and new ways to translate my images that make the structure visible and physically felt, attempting to create the image as physical object." -- Lia Cook
