About the Item
Kinetic head sculpture rotates in gentle air currents, creating a hypnotic interplay of coastal tones and organic form. AR (2024) by Aldonza is crafted in white high-temperature refractory ceramic, layered with crystalline cobalt and copper glazes that evoke Mediterranean earth and water. The 35 × 30 × 30 cm ceramic head is affixed to a 2 m–long lavender textile “neck,” allowing the piece to pendulum and spin with the slightest breeze.
Aldonza’s impulsive, experimental approach is evident in the textured surface—subtle ridges and crater-like indentations recall weathered rock, while the glaze drips suggest tidal flow. As light hits the cobalt-blue and verdant-green patina, the head appears to emerge from both earth and sea. The suspended “neck” of fine threads accentuates the sculpture’s ethereal presence, inviting viewers to contemplate the tension between material solidity and weightless movement. Ideal for large atriums, stairwells, or high-ceilinged galleries, AR transforms any space into an immersive, kinetic environment.
Conceptually, AR continues Aldonza’s exploration of identity and introspection: the closed eyes and serene expression evoke inward reflection, while the motion underscores life’s impermanence and emotional ambivalence. In this poetic work, the materiality of refractory ceramic is contrasted with the textile’s lightness, encouraging a search for inner calm amid shifting surroundings. Presented in museum-quality condition, AR requires only a sturdy ceiling mount for secure hanging.

Óscar Aldonza Torres (b. 1976, Santiago de Compostela) is a sculptor and Sculpture Professor at EASD Mestre Mateo. He holds a Diploma in Volume Techniques from EASD Mestre Mateo, a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Seville, and an MA in Art Heritage Management from the University of Santiago de Compostela. Winner of the 1st Prize at the XIV Open-Air Sculpture Symposium in O Grove and 1st Accésit of the Francisco Asorey International Sculpture Prize (Cambados), his work has been presented in venues such as the Salon d’Automne in Paris, O Rectángulo de Ouro in Portugal, “Respostas sen preguntas” at Galería Sabor a Menta (Santiago de Compostela), and “Animalium” at the MIHL Museum (Lugo), among others. In his sculptural practice, Óscar Aldonza Torres positions the human figure as an intimate mirror, reflecting universal fears and inner doubts. His creative process—both impulsive and experimental—is underpinned by rigorous material research, allowing forms to emerge organically as each work evolves. Predominantly working in series, Aldonza Torres embraces ambivalence and conceptual openness, crafting open-ended narratives that invite viewers to engage emotionally—ranging from identification to repulsion and intrigue—and to complete the dialogue with their own perceptions.
