About the Item

Created in 1965, this terre de faïence sculpture with white slip is inscribed on the sculptural base with the atelier stamps ‘EDITION PICASSO’ and ‘MADOURA PLEIN FEU’ and numbered from the edition of 50 incised on the sculptural base. Pablo Picasso Petite tête, profil gauche (Small Head, Left Profile), 1965 A.R. 535 is upon first glance a simple ceramic sculpture. A human figure, formed from a single piece of clay, extends from a rectangular ceramic base. The figure is pleasing in its simplicity – the lower body is fused, with no separate legs. Arms are defined, along with a head and delicate profile of a noise and slightly open mouth. Other than these, the surface is smooth and no other features appear. Though Picasso has only provided the bare basics of a body, the sculpture is endowed with miraculous motion. This is created by the angle of the clay, which casts shadows on the body creating complexity and the appearance of movement. When viewed from different angles and with different sources of light, more intriguing motions come to life. The positioning of the arms, one extended forward and one back, also gives Petite tête, profil gauche (Small Head, Left Profile), 1965 the impression of striding forward. This is helped by the gaze that faces ahead. Using delicate and simplistic outlines Picasso creates a lively sculpture full of movement. Paseo, from Service Scènes de Corrida, A.R. 416
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) Paseo A.R. 416 is numbered from the edition of 50 on the reverse and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse. Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Undoubtedly the theatrical drama and flashy machismo of the matadors appealed greatly to Picasso's sensibilities and resonated with his Spanish roots. In 1959, Picasso produced an 8-piece plate series, each featuring a different bullfighting scene suggested through lively stipple lines. Paseo A.R. 416 depicts a line of bullfighters highlighted by a streak of yellow. The strokes of blue above and below the figures contrast with the warm of the yellow, creating visual tension that anticipates the drama of the fight. Catalogue Raisonné & COA: Pablo Picasso Paseo...
