UnknownFemale Life-size Mannequin Italian Articulated Sculpture In Beech Mid 1800s
About the Item
Female Painter's Manikin Mid-1800s jointed and articulated, life-size Italian sculpture, 167 cm tall 66 Inches, made of beech wood with traces of lacquer preparation. This extraordinary and rare artist's mannequin presents female attributes as indicated by the adolescent breasts and the holes on the earlobes. Intended for an atelier, to serve as a model for anatomical studies, this antique wooden mannequin of Italian origin is realistically carved, fully jointed and articulated, hands are rendered in a manner particularly accurate, fingers are all jointed and finished even in nail detail. It presents itself in good state of preservation with slight integrations of the toes of the left foot and the little finger of the left hand, appears to be somewhat stiff only at the pelvis.
The verb mannequiner (from which the Italian word mannequin is derived) first appears in 18th-century France and is used to describe the act of skillfully draping fabric over a mannequin with a natural effect (J. MUNRO, Silent Partners: Artist and Mannequin from Function to Fetish, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, October 14, 2014 - January 25, 2015, exhibition catalog, p. 28).
"The articulated human figure made of wax or wood has been a common tool of European art practice since the 16th century. His indefatigable limbs and quietness enabled the artist to study anatomical proportions, fix a pose according to his own taste, and perfect the depiction of drapery and clothing. During the 19th century, however, the mannequin (or lay figure in English) gradually emerged from the atelier to become a subject in its own right, first with humor, then in more disturbing ways, playing on the unnerving psychological presence of a realistic but unreal figure, truthful but lifeless.
