About the Item
"King with Two Tribesmen" is a bronze relief sculpture from the Nigeria-Benin area tribe. It depicts three figures: two tribesmen on the left and right holding shields and the king in the center holding decorative staffs. The tribesmen also have hands on the staffs the king holds.
14" x 12 1/2" x 3"
The Benin Kingdom in Africa existed until 1897 when it was annexed by the British Empire. This piece could be a sculpture celebrating the previous regime before colonization, in which a king and his tribesmen shared a close and beneficial relationship. This relationship is exemplified by the nearly equal stature of the tribesmen and the king in the relief as well as the shared burden of holding the staffs between the king and his people.
