About the Item

This magnificent pair of boxwood sculptures, 22 cm high, depicts the Kongōrikishi, also known as Niō, the protective guardians of Japanese Buddhist temples. These towering figures, a symbol of strength and protection, are traditionally found at the entrance to temples to ward off evil spirits and protect Buddhist doctrine. The two statues embody the duality typical of their iconography: Agyō, with open mouth, represents active energy and creative force, while Ungyō, with closed mouth, embodies latent power and silent protection. The detailed carving highlights the craftsmanship of 18th-century Japanese artisans, with exceptional expressiveness and fine workmanship of boxwood, known for its hardness and finesse. The sculptures have an original patina that enhances their authenticity and historical value, making them an outstanding addition for collectors of Oriental art and sacred objects.
