Evocative and rare 17th-century carved marble skull from Lombardy, Italy. The work bears an engraved inscription on the back that reads "Carestia grandissima II2 LVIO 1630," a clear reference to the devastating famine and plague that struck the region in 1630, also recalled in Manzoni's chronicles.
Made made of marble, this highly symbolic object measures 29x15 cm with a height of 22 cm. The accuracy of the workmanship renders the fragility of the human condition with raw intensity, making it an authentic baroque memento mori.
The work has a beautiful antique patina and signs of wear consistent with its age, enhancing its authenticity and evocative power.
