Artist Statement: "The art of making, for me, is very much a response to the human condition of needing to connect to one another, as well as to what lies just beyond the borders of our realities. I am drawn to the idea that art can have the ability to affect those who look upon it, allowing these portraits to be conduits to a realm within our subconscious. Although my females are hard ceramic sculptures, their hollow, eggshell-like interiors feel like a glove or a mask that can easily be slipped on and off, like the psychic armor of a distant self. An introspective dialogue is started as I make each piece, invoking a surreal understanding of the physical and emotional auras of these strange beauties. Heavy in symbolism, they illustrate the psychological scope of a hybrid creature. Their wide-eyed gazes are meant to portray an emotional duality that is constantly evolving. “I approach making with a childlike spirit of experimentation and exploration. My work stems from a love of the wood fired ceramic surface, particularly how it evokes many beautiful natural phenomena. Like imagining the way wind gathers and deposits leaves on a landscape according to changes in topography, I anticipate the manner in which ash will collect differently on the convex and concave surfaces of my gestural forms. Originally from the Northwest with a B.A. from Stanford University, I have painted, published illuminated books, and lived and traveled extensively in Asia. Now working primarily in ceramics, I draw images from the deep well of past experience, always starting from a strong “mind’s eye” vision. My ceramic pieces are as much about their inside as they are about their sculpted outside. Implied are the dichotomies between the inner and outer, between that which is hidden and that which is seen, between the esoteric and the exoteric, between the soul and the body. I continue to create “Metaphysical Pots” that feature water both inside and outside, becoming metaphorically both the Water of Life and the Infinite Ocean, symbolizing the continuous process between creation and transcendence. Other pieces include shapes that repeat in a pattern that follows the form of the vessel. It is a “bio-geometry” that leads the eye back to the inside of the vessel, a “Jacob’s Ladder” that leads not just up but in. Using sculptural techniques, I cut through the wall of the pot to get more depth and dynamic movement. I continue to push the limits of my medium, taking apart thrown vessels and reconfiguring them in new ways.

Bonnie Seeman grew up in Miami, Florida with a propensity towards anatomy illustration and the dazzling colors and rich foliage of the Miami landscape. Developing her technique with porcelain and glass, Seeman channeled her inspirations; resulting in vessels that are both beautiful and macabre. Combinations of muscular and skeletal anatomy and plant forms are the makeup of these sculptural utilitarian vessels. Instead of dwelling on dying, Seeman’s palpable forms culminate in an acute awareness and awe toward life, renewal, nature, and vitality.
Shortly after completing her master’s degree in Fine Arts, Seeman was recognized by Galeria OMR in Mexico City, a gallery known for its cutting-edge artists. In effect, Seeman’s porcelain was taken out of the craft context and placed in exhibitions such as ARCO in Madrid, FIAC in Paris, and Art Basel. She shows extensively throughout the United States and was recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation 2005 Biennial Competition Award.
